Application October 27, 1945, Serial No. 624,991
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a concealed post support and releasable or detachable connection therefor which may be used in a number of ways, for example in supporting rods of many varied characters as towel rods, various other rods, or the post alone in proper form may be connected to a vertical wall or other carrier therefor extending outwardly from the wall and serve as a means to carry or hang things upon.
It is a primary object and purpose of the present invention to provide a structure of the type specified in which a very secure reinforced detachable supporting means for the post is provided, one which is sturdy and durable in service, of simple construction and, therefore, economically manufactured and in which the visible portions of the post may have applied thereto artistic or decorative designs. An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention utilizing two of the posts as spaced apart supporting arms for the ends of an interposed rod between them.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the complete post.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the two major parts of the post disassembled, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical section similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the separable parts as they are either being brought together or separated.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
In the construction illustrateda hollow post or arm I made of sheet metal, adjacent one end is exteriorly threaded and a short distance from said end a collar 2 is permanently secured around it. A covering plate 3 of sheet metal, which may carry a decorative design, has an opening for the passage of the threaded end of the post and is adapted to be bound tightly against the collar 2 by a nut 4 threaded onto the end of the hollow post. The nut is of circular form and is provided with a fiange 5 extending outwardly therefrom as shown preferably though not necessarily continuously therearound.
The outer end of the arm I in the illustration ofthe embodiment of the invention shown is formed with a square socket 6, and when two of the posts are attached to a wall in proper spaced relation to each other the ends of a square rod I may be received in said sockets, thus providing a towel rod. It is to be understood that the outer end formation of the post as shown is subject to indefinite variation in form and shape, as the invention is not essentially concerned with a par ticular cross section of towel rod to be supported, the rods may be of circular cross section or of any other desired cross sectional form, nor is it essential in conjunction with my invention that a plurality of the novel posts of the invention be used together. For example, the outer end of the post I may be formed into a ball or hook and when connected to and extending outwardly from a wall or similar member to which attached serve as a support in itself.
For connecting the hollow post structure with its base attached thereto to the wall a flat plate 8 of metal is provided with openings for passages of screws to drive into the wall or other member. A preferably solid cylindrical rod 9 is permanently connected to said plate and extends at right angles therefrom. Adjacent the side of the plate from which the member 9 extends a relatively thin metal plate In is located and secured, the member 9 passing centrally therethrough. The plate III of circular form at its edges is provided with a plurality of upwardly extending spring fingers II, vertically separated from each other and at their upper ends being first curved inwardly and then outwardly as shown.
In attaching the post member I and the cover plate 3 secured thereto, the open end of the post I is brought to the outer end of the cylindrical member 9 and it is telescoped thereover. The flange 5 engages with the upper free ends of the fingers II at their inner sides and springs them outwardly until the flange has passed below the upper reversedly curved ends of the fingers, whereupon said fiange is gripped tightly by the fingers and the post I with its base 3 is securely yet detachably secured in place. Preferably, the outer hollow post I tapers slightly inwardly away from the base 8 so that the outer end of the memher 9 when it reaches its final position may be gripped by the post I, thereby avoiding any loose motion or rattling, while the larger opening at the entrance end of the post is held securely in a centrally disposed position around the member 9 by the gripping fingers H.
The construction described is very practical and effective and has been proven wholly satisfactory in practical use. It is economically produced and may be sold at a relatively low cost.
The invention is defined in the appended claim and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
A fixture support comprising a base plate REFERENCES CITED dapted to be attached to a wall, a post rigidly The following references are of record in the attached to said plate and extending outwardly file Of this pat nt: from one side thereof, a spring clip attached to 5 UNITED STATES PATENTS said plate at the base of said post, a tubular support snugly surrounding said post and extending Number Name Date outwardly therefrom, a detent on said support 1,076,803 -F 1913 engaging said spring clip, and an ornamental 1,721,306 Koermg July 1929 cover on :said supporlt lying over and concealing 10 1,997,686 H9egger P 1935 said base plate, spring *clip and detent, said de- 29761; sladek 1939 tent being releasable from said spring clip by 2,373,810 Churchln 17, 1945 strong outward pull on said support.
