Description

J. A. HUMBS. CURTAIN POLE.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. HUMES, OF PARNASSUS, PENNSYLVANIA.
CURTAIN -POLE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. HUMES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at larnassus, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to curtain poles, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a novel curtain pole to which curtains can be secured without the use of rings and pins, second, to provide novel means for holding one or more curtains in engagement with the pole whereby said curtains can be easily draped or arranged, andthird, to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable pole that will present a neat and attractive appearance in connection with a window, door or alcove.
I attained the above objects by a curtain pole that will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of a pole constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same partly in elevation. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of a pole taken on the line 0c0c of Fig. 1. Fig. at is a similar view taken on the line g y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of my pole illustrating one way of draping curtains thereon, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal secti onal view of a portion of my pole illustrating a slight modification thereof.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a cylindrical pole l with a longitudinal groove 2, extending from one end of said pole to the other. This pole can be made of wood, or a composition, and its ends are provided with knobs 3. The pole intermediate its ends is provided with a screw or rivet 4 having a bifurcated head 5. Pivotally mounted by pins 6 within the head 5 Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 427,231.
are two resilient rods 7 adapted to fit in the groove 2 of the pole 1. To retain the outer ends of the rod 7 within the groove, I provide the pole 1 adjacent to the outer ends thereof with clamps, each clamp comprising a screw 8 having a hook shaped head 9 adapted to be rotated to engage the end of a rod 7 and retain said rod within the groove 2.
In lieu of screws 8, I can use clamps comprising pivoted buttons 10 (see Fig. 6), these buttons being pivotally mounted upon plates ll secured to the pole 1 by screws 12. The buttons are adapted to swing over the groove 2 and retain the ends of the rod 7 therein.
The curtains to be attached to the pole are placed and arranged upon the rods 7, when the rods are in a position illustrated in. Fig. 2 and then these rods are swung into the groove 2 and secured therein by the clamps. The pole can then be turned to drape the curtains over the pole, or position with the groove 2 upon the under side of the pole, whereby the curtains will be simply suspended from the rod within said groove.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is j A curtain pole having a longitudinal groove formed therein extending from end to end, knobs carried by the ends of said pole, a rivet carried by said pole intermediat the ends of said pole for engageing the furcated head, resilient rods pivotally connected to said head and adapted to fit within said groove, and revoluble clamps arranged at the ends of said pole for engaging the outer ends of said rods and retaining said rods within said groove, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. HUMES.
