IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,139, dated June 24, 1873; application filed August 10, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH P. ISRAEL and DANIEL W. MOLANE, of Oil Oity, Venango county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Base-Knob for Doors,
Windows, &c.; and we do hereby declare that.
the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a cheap, durable, and effectual door check and catch.
This check may be made of any suitable materialas cast or malleable iron-ornamental or plain.
In the drawing, A is the bumper, which is fastened to the base-board or wall securely, and serves to keep the door a sufficient distance from the wall to prevent the key and knob from injuring the wall. This bumper is provided with two'lugs on the upper part of it, as shown in the drawing, for a purpose hereinafter described. B is nothing more than a properly-shaped lever, with a latch on one end and a button or knob on the other, being so formed that the latch end is the heaviest. E is a small plate or escutcheon, which covers an orifice in the door.
The practical operation of this door-check is as follows: The bumper A and the latch or lever B are joined together with a rivet or pin, allowing the lever free play. The bumper is then fastened to the base-board or wall. An orifice is then made in the door at the proper place and the escutcheon E placed over it. The lever B, having a beveled latchhead, when it is struck by the lower edge of the orifice in the escutcheon E will be raised up, and,as soon as the latch passes inside the escutcheon, the lever drops by its own weight and holds the door until it is relieved by pressing on the other or knob end of the lever.
In the drawing the edge of the door is broken away to show the operation of the latch.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bumper with a weighted latch-lever pivoted in lugs thereon, and furnished with an upwardly-projecting short arm and the escutcheon on the door, all substantially as described. I
