Description

H. H. MINER. Shutter Fastenings.
Patented Dec. 23, 1873.
F'IG. I.
FIG, .2.
l/VVENTOR.
WITNESSES.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
-HERBERT H. MINER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,888, dated December 23, 1873; application filed November 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. MINER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter and Blind 4 Fastenings, of which the following, taken in sill when the blind is closed, and with a similar hook set in the wall of the house when the blind is. open, said lever having secured to its upper end a draw-rod, extending therefrom to or near the hinge-stile of the blind, and provided at either end thereof with an arm turned at right angles thereto, as a convenient means of operating the latch-lever to disengage it from the catch with which it is made to engage by means of a U shaped spring, as will be more fully described.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a closed blind with my improved fastening attached. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line :20 a: on Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 2 z on Figs. land 2.
A is the lower rail of an ordinary windowblind, and B the hinge-stile of the same. G is a double-armed latch-lever, pivoted at a to the rail A in a vertical, or nearly vertical, position, as shown. D is a draw-rod, made of round wire, bent to the form shown in Fig. 2, and connected at one end to the upper end of the latch-lever G, and the other end having a bearing in the plate I), secured to the stile B, the parts D and 1) thereof, which are bent at right angles to the body of the rod, being used as handles for movin g said rod endwise,
for unlatchin g the blind when fastenedD to be used when the blind is open, and D when the blind is closed. A bow or U shaped spring,
o, is secured, by one end, to the plate I), or to any convenient part of the blind, and the other end is connected to the draw-rod D in such a manner as to serve to move said rod toward the double-armed latch-1ever O, and by the connection of said rod therewith cause the latch to engage with the hookd set in the wim dow-sill E when the blind is closed, and with the hook 0 set in the outside of the wall of the building when the blind is open. The lower end of the double-armed latch-lever 0 passes through a slot in the plate f, secured to the under edge of the rail A, and projects a short distance below the same. The hook 6?, set in the Window-sill, is of peculiar form, to adapt it to receive the vertical double-armed latchlever O, and at the same time be capable of being driven into the window-sill, the catch portion thereof being bent at right angles to the shank, or the portion driven into the sill.
Other kinds of springs may be used instead of the one shown, as a spiral, or a flat-leaf spring, if desired; or the draw-rod may be made flat instead of round, and pivoted to the doublearmed latch-lever by means of a pin, all without afi'ecting the principle of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The double-armed latch-lever G, pivoted to the shutter or blind, as set forth, in combination with a draw-rod, D, connected to its upper end, and extending therefrom to or near the hingestile, a spring, 0, for controlling the action of said latch, and suitable catches secured to the window-sill and the wall of the building, all substantially as described.
Executed at Boston this 13th day of N ovember, 1873.
HERBERT H. MINER.
Witnesses WM. P. EDWARDS, N. O. LOMBARD.
