Description

D'. JrMUFFITT.
Fasteners for Shutters and Doors.
No. 140,064. raremedrunennsrs.
PATENT OFEIcE.
DAVID J. MOFFITT, OF THORNTOWN, INDIANA.
' IMPRVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR SHUTTERS AND DOORS.
Speciicaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,064, dated June 17, 1873 application led May 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID J. MoEElTT, of Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Door-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the anneXed drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my deviceapplied to the doors of a barn or other structure, showing the doors closed 5 Fig. 2 represents a similar view thereof, showing the doors open and fastened back in place through the holder or holders, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the staples which receive the ends of bolts of the holder, havin gan inwardly-projectin g lip or plate.
In the several iigures corresponding parts are designated by similar letters of refer-` ence.
This invention is designed, particularly, for holding doors open when such is required, but it also acts to hold them closed; and it consists in the employment of one or more sliding bolts, having one end bent or formed into a right angle to enter a staple suitably disposed, and having its other end likewise bent and supplied with a handle, substantially as hereinafter more fully specified. A
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, A A refer to a duplication of bolts, constructed after my improvement or plan, one adjusted or affixed to one door of the barn, or other building, and the other to the other door thereof, but a little out of a horizontal plane with its fellow, through staples or clips fastened to the said doors, by means of which they are also rendered susceptible of endwise, as well as a partiallyrotary, movement, for the purpose to be hereinafter explained. The contiguous ends of these bolts are bent, or formed into right angles, (see Fig. 1,) so as to form hooks a a thereon, whereby the bolts may be caused to engage with the staples B B, fastened to the outside of the building, when the doors are open and thrown back against the latter, as shown in Fig. 2. The opposite ends of these bolts are likewise bent and formed with handles a a, by which they may be conveniently grasped and operated. To prevent the hooked ends of the-bolts A Aturning downward, and thereby becoming disengaged from the staples B B when thrust therein, the latter are provided with inwardlyprojecting lips or plates b, as shown in Fig. 3.
In Fig. l the doors are closed and the contigous ends of the bolts shot past each other. In this position they are caused to hold the doors closed. Withdraw the bolts past the point of contact between the doors, and throw the same, the doors, back aga-inst the building, as shown in Fig, 2, then shoot the bolts out and lift the handles thereof to a horizontal position. ends of the bolts in readiness for insertion in the staples B B, which can now be accomplished by turning the handles downward; and, by shooting the bolts back or inwardly, the said hooked ends thereof will be caught and held in the staples by the lips or plates b thereon, which operation will enable the doors to be held open despite the blowing of the wind, 85e.
lllaving thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is-
'Ihe door-holder, composed of one or more bolts, A A, havin g the hooks a a and handles a a', in combination with one or more recessed staples, B B b, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 9th day of May, 1873, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID J. MOFFITT. Witnesses:
