IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-WASHERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,979., dated June 17, 1873; application filed May 5, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. TERRELL, of North Blanford, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes -Wasl1- er, of which the following is a specification:

This invention is an improvement in fountain wash-boilers and consists in a combination of perforated and imperforate conical false bottoms and a vertical discharge-tube, as herein described.

This apparatus is placed in the ordinary wash-boiler, and is designed to fit the inside thereof, with its outer rim resting on the bottom, and forms a false bottom itself, marked A. B is a tapering tube attached to the center of A, which extends to near the top of the boiler, having upon its end a removable T- shaped eXhaust-pipe,G. D is a lining beneath the false bottom A of nearly corresponding shape, but of somewhat smaller diameter. The outer edge of this lining rests at its ends upon the bottom of the boiler, but its sides are raised up so that the water readily passes beneath it onto the bottom of the boiler. The lining is arranged a short distance below the false bottom A, leaving an open space, E, between the two. The lining is held in position by means of a short tube or collar, F, which enters the vertical tube 13, as seen in Fig. 1. G represents holes through the false bottom A.

When water is placed in the boiler it at once finds its way to the bottom. Heat being applied, steam is generated and the water, or steam and water combined, is forced upward by the pressure through the tube B, through the agency of the conical imperforate lining D, which prevents the flow or escape of the same laterally.

The clothes to be washed are placed in the boiler, resting on the false bottom A, and the water thus raised is discharged through the T-pipe O on top of the clothes, and percolates by its own gravity down through the clothes passes next through the holes G, and thus enters the space E between the parts A and D, whence it flows downward over said partD to the bottom boiler. A circulation of water is thus kept up through the clothes, the rapidity of which is according to the quantity of steam generated. 4

This operation soon cleanses the clothes, little or no rubbing being necessary, and vastly diminishing the usual labors of the washingday.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An apparatus for washing clothes in an ordinary boiler, consisting-of the conical perforated false bottom A, vertical tube B, T discharge-pipe G, and imperforate lining D, when the same are constructed and arranged as shown and described.

2. The removable lining D, in combination with the false bottom of a wash-boiler, as and for the purposes described.
