INVENTOR /E V/N6 MEL-LEE A TTORNEYS IT E D S T CONVERTIBLE GARMENT.
specification of Letters T'atent.
Patented Tree. b, 1%21.
Application filed January 13, 1921. Serial No. 436,950.
To all whom it may concern:
BQTT known that I, TRVING WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Tmproved Uonvertible'Grarment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel, and its objectis to provide a new and improved convertible garment more especially designed for wear by children and arranged to combine bloomers, a waist and a dress to permit wearing the dress with or without the bloomers or the bloomers without the dress.
Another object is to permit of conveniently opening the convertible garment at the rear for sanitary purposes.
Another object is to provide a convertible garment which when worn in either form is of exceedingly neat appearance.
T Vith these andother objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as. hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a. part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the improved garment worn as bloomers and waist;
Fig. 2 is a, rear perspective view of the same with the sanitary flap partly open;
Fig. 3 is a front perspective view of the improved convertible garment applied as a combined dress and bloomers;
Fig. 41- is a rear perspective view of the same;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 55 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross section of the shoulder support for the dress and the waist, the section being on the line 6--6 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 7 is a similar view of the joint at the front of the bloomers and waist, the section being on the line 7--7 of Fig. 1.
The convertible garment in its general construction comprises a dress 10, bloomers 11, and a waist 12 forming an integral part of the bloomers 11 to support the latter from the shoulders of the wearer. The combined bloomers 11 and waist 12 are worn underneath the dress 10, as shown in Figs. 3 and i, but, if desired, the dress 10 may be ornitted and the combined bloomers 11 and waist 12 be worn without the dress 10. The dress 10 is provided with shoulder straps formed of front and rear sections 15 and 16 fastened together at the top of the shoulders by suitable fastening devices 17 such as buttons and buttonholes or snap fasteners of usual construction (see Fig. 6). The front and rear sections 15 and 16 of the shoulder straps when fastened together provide arm scyes 18 and a neck and front opening 19.
The waist 12v is provided with suitable sleeves 20 which project through the arm scyes 18, and the waist 12 is provided with a collar 21 extending through the neck and front opening 19 to overlie the upper portion of the shoulder straps and thus to conceal the overlapping ends of the shoulder strap sections 15 and 16 and their fastenings 17 and 18. The upper portion of the bosom of the Waist 12 appears through the front opening 19 thus enhancing the appearance of the convertible garment when worn as a combined dress, bloomers and waist.
Tn practice, the waist 12 is constructed to be opened and closed at the back, as indicated at 25 in Fig. 2., and the upper back portion of the bloomers 11 is provided with a sanitary flap 30 adapted to be opened and closed in the usual manner. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the sanitary flap 80 can be opened or closed without requiring the removal of the outer dress 10, and the combined bloomers 11 and waist 12 can be readily donned or removed by having the open back and sanitary flap.
It is understood that the legs of the bloomers 11 are provided with the usual-elastics for holding the lower ends of the legs in firm engagement with the legs of the wearer. The bloomers 11 are provided with pockets 10 and the dress 10 is likewise provided with suitable pockets 11.
It will. be noticed that the dress 10 and the combined bloomers 11 and waist 12 are supported from the shoulders of the wearer and independently one of the other to give the desired freedom to the wearer of the convertible garment.
Tn the manufacture of the combined bloomers 11 and waist 12 a portion of the front is cut out and the edges securely fastened together With the aid of a binding 50, to provide a horizontally disposed joint 51 Which foreshortens the front of the bloomers 11 to insure the proper hang thereof.
The dress 10 is preferably Worn with a belt 60 which, however, can be dispensed with.
Having thus describedmy invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent':
1. A convertible garment, comprising a dress having shoulder straps each made in front and back sections provided With fastening means for fastening the sections together, the shoulder straps providing a neck and front opening and arm scyes, and combined bloomers and Waist, the bloomers having a sanitary back flap and forming an in- I tegral part of the Waist, the latter having sleeves extending through the said arm scyes of the dress.

A convertible garment, comprising a dress having shoulder straps each made in front and back sections providedvvith fastening means for fastening the sections together, the shoulder straps providing a neck and front opening and arm scyes, and combined bloomers and waist, "the bloomers having a sanitary back flap and forming an in tegral part of the Waist, the latter having sleeves extending through the said arm scyes and having a collar extending through the said neck and front opening of the dress and overlying the shoulder straps thereof.
