The cycle of operations is that of an ordinary Jfoar-cycle explosion engine except that the operations are eii'eetive on opposite sides ot the piston 4 in sach manner that the operations overlap. That 1s when a charge is entering the cylinder on one lside oi the pis-- ton an explosion may be taking place on the other side of the piston, or the explosion may take place when scavenging is occnrring on the other side ot the piston. Thatever be the order ot' operations` the engine is suitably timed to cause the intake, compression, explosion and-exhaust on one side of the pist-on to be so related to the` like operations on the other side of the piston that the piston receives two power impulses for each single power impulse of the ordinary four cycle engine. The powei` ol' tlw'engine is therefore applied evenly, and correepondihgly more power is developed with a expenditure of energy than is customary. The application. of power to the shaft is similar to that of a two-cycle engine with the advantage of a considerable increase in the power impulses. Since the explosion chambers are arranged on both sides oi' the piston where each acts with the eilicieney ot a toux-cycle engine, the combined etiiciency of the engine is materially in ad vance of a two-cycle engine. The ellect is that of tivo :tour-cycle engines working in alternation but more economically than occurs with two separate four-cycle enginesv Working side by side or lin tandem.
