Description

A. FISHER. I 'HAT PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED OCT; 22,1920.

' HAT-PROTECTOR.
mamas.
Application filed October 22, 1920. Serial Ito.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JUSTINE A. FISHER, a citizen of the Republic of Czechoslovakia, having declared my intentions of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, cit county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
While applicable to hats generally'my invention is designed more particularly for the protection of masculine stiif hats, and espe cially those made of straw,--the object being to provide a simple, cheap, light weight, strong, tenacious and effective cover for protection against the deleterious efi'ects of rain or moisture, as well as for use as an envelop for storage or transportation.
I am aware that sheet rubber has been used in the manufacture of hat protectors, but unless the sheets are so' thick and heavy as to render the protector cumbersome, such material is lacking in strength and tenacity, and rips or tears if great care is not exerdetaching the protector from the head gear, besides which the relatively thin rubber is not impervious to moisture. Furthermore rubber sheeting soon deteriorates in quality and becomes brit tle and subject to ering useless as a indicated.
My invention is designed to obviate these difficulties and to afford a strong, light weight, flexible, tenacious covering of durable quality which is absolutely impervious to moisture; and the invention consists in a protector of the character designated made entirely of oiled silk, so called commercially, with the joints between the parts hermetically sealed by means of a waterproof cement, so as to constitute practically a unitary structure, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings,
igure 1, is a central cross section of a straw hat showing the practical application of my improved protector; 4 Fig. 2, is a sectional perspective upon a larger scale, broken away centrally, of my improved protector.
or convenience of illustration, in Fig. 1, the hat is shown in'white outline and the crazing, rendering the covprotector for the purposes Specification of Letters Patent.

protector in solid black; but in Fig. 2, the parts of the hat are hatched in one direction and the parts of the protector in the opposite y protector is formed entirely of the sheet material known commercially as oiled silk; and consists of the crown top a, side strip 8, and rim section 1', these parts, where they overlap, as at a, a, being hermetically sealed and united permanently by means of a moisture proof adhesive.
The rim-section r,is also formed with a peripheral overlap r, the inturned edge T of which is in like manner hermetically sealed and united to the under side of the said rim section 1 forming a circumscribing casing is, which 'incloses an elastic resilient piping or drawing cord d, by means of which the protector is stretched and held taut upon the hat when applied thereto.
'h, represents the cross section of the hat body; I), the external hat band; and 2', the internal sweat band.
By the term moisture-proof adhesive as herein used I mean to include any binding material adapted to make a permanent, moisture proof, joint between the opposed surfaces of oiled silk to which it is applied.
The oiled silk is strong, tough and tenacious, and absolutely impervious to moisture; and the several sections of the protector being united, and the joints permanently sealed by a moisture proof adhesive as stated, the product, as a unitary structure,
is substantial and durable, and practically indestructible if used with ordinary care.
Furthermore it is of light weight, and neat and compactin appearance as applied to a a hat proripheral crown flange, and a rim section of oiled silk formed with a flange hermetically lepsible and foldable upon itself, substancemented to the lower edge of said side tially in the manner and for the purpose decrown band, the peripheral edge of said rim scribed.
