ATTORNEY PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN D. REIST, OF WILLIAMSVILLE, NEW YORK.
DOUBLE-GRIP-SOCKE'I' WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
Application filed August 14, 1920. Serial No. 403,452.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN D. REIs'r, residing at \Villiamsville, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Double- Grip-Socket renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and one of the principal objects-is to provide a device of this nature whereby both the head of a bolt and the nut therefor may be grasped by a single instrument.
Another object is to produce a device of this kind with interchangeable grlps.
Another object is to provide a device of this nature with improved and simplified means .for forcing the grips into contact with the bolt.
Other objects will appear from the following description and claim.
.All of these objects are accomplished by the means shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in all views.
This invention contemplates the providing of a wrench for use on bolts and nuts located in inaccessible parts of machines such as in automobiles or in any place where two wrenches are necessary for tightening a single bolt. In many instances under the present practice, it is necessary that two men work at a single bolt to tighten it, and it is the purpose of-the present device to permit one man to effect the operation as now effected by two and thus produce the best results with the greatest economy of means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I represents a main member having a sleeve-like tubular body portion 2. one end of which is provided with a reduced portion 3 so as to form a shoulder 4. This reduced portion is provided with screw threadsas at 5. The other end of member 1 has a U-shaped oif-set portion 6, which terminates in a horizontally disposed squared and ta ered end 7.
ivotally mounted on the reduced portion 3 so as to turn freely thereon is a handle 8 which is kept from falling off by a nut 9 screwed on to the screw threads 5.
A rod 10 extends through the tubular portion 2 and terminates at one end in a squared and tapered. portion 11, and has a handle 12 rigidly secured to its other end.
Mounted on the squared portion 7 is a socket member 13 provided with a cavity 14 of suitable size and shape to grip the head of a bolt; and mounted on the squared portion 11 is a socket member 15 provided with a cavity 16 for gripping a nut.
In operation, the head of a bolt may be inserted in socket member 13 and a nut to co-act with the bolt in socket member 15. Handles 8 and 12 are then both grasped and forced toward each other which moves rod 10 through sleeve 2 to bring the nut into firm contact with the end of the bolt. The bandles 8 and 12 are then turned to the right or left as may be necessary to tighten or loosen the nut. It is to be understood that if more convenient, the nut may be gripped in socket 13 and the bolt head in socket 15; and'that the device is equally applicable to the applying and removing of nuts.
\Vhen it is desired to use the wrench for a different size of bolts. or nuts the socket members may be taken off by a smart blow from a hammer and other sockets of suitable size substituted.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention, limited only by the appended claim.
I claim A double grip socket wrench comprising a member having a sleeve portion and a squared portion. a socket member removably secured to said squared portion, a rod slidably mounted in said sleeve portion and provided with a squared end portion, a socket member removably secured to said squared portion of said rod, and handles secured to the first said member and to said rod. as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I-have affixed my at re.
WARREN D, REIST.
