A. MOTTER.
SCOURING DEVICE.
APPLICATION HLED FEB. 23. I92I.

PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW MOTTER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
SCOURING DEVICE.
Application filed February 23, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW Morrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scouring Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a scouring device which is more particularly adapted for cleaning pots, pans, etc.
Its object is to provide an lmplement of this character having convenient means for removably securing the brush or cleaning member in place, so that when the same becomes worn a new one can be readily substituted for it.
Further objects are to produce a scouring device which is simple and durable in construction, which firmly grips the cleaning member, and which can be produced at a moderate cost.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is aperspective view of one embodiment of the scouring device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the jaws or clamps for holding the brush. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the device. Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross section on line 66, Fig. 5.
Similar characters .of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. 7
Referring to Figs. 14, inclusive, 1O represents the handle of the scouring device which is provided at its'front end with a stem or shank 11 whose opposite sides are preferably flattened throughout their length, as shown at 12. As shown in Fig. 2, this stem is ta ered from its front end to its rear end.
referably mounted removably 011 the stem 11 are a pair of spaced longitudinal holding jaws or clamps 13 which are preferably of substantially U-shaped form and which are constructed of wire or similar flexible or elastic material. The base portions 14 of these jaws are adapted to engage an annular groove or recess 15 in the rear end of the handle-stem, while the arms 16 of each jaw bear against the opposite flat sides of said stem and project a suitable distance beyond the front end of the latter, whereby they are adapted to removably hold or support a cleaning member or scouring brush 1'? between them. This brush is preferably Specificatien of Letters Patent.
- constructed of Patented Nov. 1, 19.21. Serial No. 447,289.
steel wool, although, if desired, any other appropriate material may e employed. A keeper or clamping ring 18 slldable lengthwise on the handle stem and encircling the arms of the holding jaws serves to firmly and reliably clamp the latter in a fixed position on said stem and also to contract their free ends to tightly grasp the brush between them.
To further guard against displacement of the brush 17 between the jaws, the arms of the latter are provided at their front ends with lnwardly bent portions or prongs 19 which penetrate the brush from opposite sides. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the arms 16 of eachj aw preferably diverge forwardly to uniformly support the brush on either side of its center.
Those portions of the arms adjacent their base portlons 14 are preferably offset or bent mwardly, as shown at 20, Figs. 1, 3 and 4. whereby the arms are given a greater extent of bearing against the flat sides of the handle stem 11, and said base portions are more reliably interlocked with the groove 15. B providing the handle-stem with flat sides. turning or twisting of the jaws thereon is avoided and by employing the groove 15 for the reception of the base portions of the jaws, longitudinal displacement thereof relatively to the handle stem is prevented.
To insert a brush between the jaws, the keeper 18 is slid rearwardly to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the base portions of the jaws being at the same time held by the hand in engagement with the groove 15. The jaws are now separated, as shown by dotted lines in the same figure, and the brush 17 is placed between them, after which said jaws are brought together and the keeper slid forwardly to tightly clamp the jaws in placeon the handle-stem and close them to grip the brush between them. To remove a worn brush, it is only necessary to slide the keeper rearwardly and separate the jaws to release the brush, whereupon a new one may be readily substituted for it.
In the modification shown in Figs, 5 and 6, the arms 21 of each of the holding jaws are seated in a pair of longitudinal grooves or recesses 22 formed in the cylindrical stem 23 of the handle 24. A keeper 25, similar to that shown in the first-described construction, serve to reliably retainthe arms in position on the stem and also to tightly compress their free ends about the brush. The
longitudinal grooves 22 prevent twisting or rotary displacement of the jaws on the handle-stem, in a manner equivalent to the flat sides 12 of the construction first described.
This improved scouring device is exceed ingly simple in construction, being composed of few parts which are strong, durable and not liable to get out of order. Furthermore, the provision of separable holding jaws permits ready insertion and removal of brushes when desired, affording a very economical scouring implement for household use. By detachably mounting the jaws on the handle-stem, the parts can be thoroughly cleaned, rendering the device sanitary.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a handle having a stem, a pair of separable jaws removably mounted on said stem, the rear portions of said jaws embracing said stem while the front portions thereof are adapted to grasp a. cleaning member between them, said stem and the rear portions of said jaws having complementary interlocking elements which hold tne jaws against longitudinal displacement on the stem in both directions, and a single retaining member encircling said jaws and said stem for detachably securing the jaws thereto and contracting the same to grip said cleaning member. a
2. A device of the character described, comprising a handle provided with a transverse groove, a pair of jaws removably mounted on said handle and extending forwardly therefrom, the rear ends of said jaws interlocking with said groove and the front ends-thereof being adapted to grasp a cleaning member between them, and a retaining member on said handle engaging said jaws for clamping them to said handle and contracting them about said cleaning member.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a handle provided with a. transverse groove, a pair of substantially U- shaped jaws carried by said handle and having their base portions seated in said groove, the rear portions of the arms of said jaws extending along the handle and the remaining portions extending forwardly therefrom for grasping a cleaning member between them, and a clamping member on said handle engaging said jaws for contracting them about said cleaning member.
a. A device of the character described,
comprising a handle provided with a stem flattened on opposite sides, a pair of separable jaws of substantially U-shaped form carried by the stem, the rear portions of the arms of eachjaw bearing against the opposing flat sides of said stem, while the front portions thereof extend forwardly beyond said stem for grasping a cleaning member between them, and means on'said stemengaging said jaws for contracting them about said cleaning member and clamping them to said handle stem. 7
A device of the character described,
comprising a handle provided with a stem whose opposite sides are flattened, said stem being provided with an annular groove, a pair of separable jaws of substantiallyv U- shaped form carried by the stem and having their base portions seated in said groove,
the rear portions of the arms of each jaw bearing against opposite sides of said stem, while the front portions thereof extend forwardly beyond the stem and terminate in inwardly-bent prongs for gripping. a clean ing member between them, and a retaining member slidable on said handle-stem and engaging said jaws for clamping them to said stem and contracting them about said cleaning member.
6. A devlce of the character described, comprlslng a handle provided wlth a stem 'whose opposite sides are fiattenechsaid stem them, and means for contracting said jaws.
