GEORGE LANGE, or nnonx, new YORK.
HOLDER FOR STEEL WOOL.
Application filed September 22, 1927. Serial No. 221,254.
This invention relates to improvements in clamping devices and has particular reference to a device in the form of a holder for holding steel wool.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved holder of simple, practical and inexpensive construction, wherein the clamping jaws are so formed that they will securely grip a piece of steel wool therebetween in a to manner which will enable a person to effectively cleanse pots and pans and the surfaces of other like utensils.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing Figure l is a plan view of the holder illustrating the manner of its use;
Figure 2 is a side elevationthereof, partly broken away and shown in section;
Figure 3 is an end view of the clamping jaws; and
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numerals 5 and 6 indicate con'iplemcntal clamping members having lugs .7 extending from the side edges thereof and intermediate the ends of the members. Through these lugs there is extended a pin 8 pivotally connecting the clamping members. At the handle ends of said members the same ing seats for the ends of a coil spring 10 which normally exerts outward pressure thereon so as to retain the opposite ends or jaws 11. in clamping relation in order to hold the piece or wad of steel wool therebetween.
Each of the clamping members is -of uniform width throughout most of its length but at the end where the same terminates in the jaw 11 the member is widened, as clearly shown in Figure 1, so as to impart considerable more width to the jaw than that of the remaining portion of the member and the ends of the jaw are rounded at their widened portions so that the steel wool 12 will conform generally to the contour of the aw when held between the clamping members. This rounded contour of the ends-of the jaw 11 and the 5 are provided with opposed recesses 9 form-' like formation of the steel wool thereabout enables the latter to be inserted into small recesses or crevices in surfaces to be cleaned, such as indicated in Figure 1, thereby facilitating the thorough cleansing of said surfaces. The jaws 11 are each provided with a plurality of openings 12 which facilitate the draining of water from between the jaws, thereby minimizing the possibility of rusting of thematerial.
To securely hold the wool 12 in position between the clamping members the latter are provided on their side edges with the flanges 13 which taper towards the aws 11 and which merge into the narrow flanges 14 extending across the front edges of the jaws. One of the jaws is provided adjacent its rounded end with a V-shapcd prong or tooth 15 and extending from the flange 14 of said jaw and adjacent the first named prong is a second prong 16. Then at the opposed rounded end of the other jaw there is provided a prong 17, While adjacent the last named end the second jaw is formed with still another prong 18 extending in the opposite direction from the prong 16 and spaced 2. distance therefrom. When the wool 12 is held between the clamping members under the influence of the spring 10 the prongs of the jaws thereof cooperate with the side flanges 13 and flanges 1 1 of the jaws to securely retain the wool between said jaws and prevent shifting of said wool when m use.
The clamping members 5 and 6 may each be stamped or otherwise formed from a single piece of suitable material such as metal, thus materially reducing the cost of manufacture thereof.
What is claimed is:
A holder for steel wool to be used in clean- 7 flan es of one jaw with one of the prongs exend of the first named jaw carrying the first temfing from the side flange of the jaw at the named prongs, and a spring interposed beroumled end thereof and the other prong extween said clamping members to normally l0 tending: from the front flange thereof, a secretain the jaws in clam ing position.
5 0nd pair of inturned prongs for the other jaw In testimony whereo I have aflixed my sigarranged similarly to the first named prongs, nature. but at the end of said other jaw opposite the GEORGE LANGE,
