IMPROVEMEN'II IN PARLOR-BEDSTEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,454, dated J une 3, 1873; application filed March 13, 1873.

To all whom it may concern: i

Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. COFFIN, o Boston, in the county of Suolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parlor-Beds, of which the following is a specification:

The object of the first part of my invention is to so combine a toilet-case, on the top of a parlor-bed frame, with a hinged shelf as to serve the purpose of a receptacle for toilet-articles, and, when being used, the shelf shall serve as a support for the same; the front of said case being furnished with mirrors facilitates the arrangement of the toilet, and when the bed-frame is turned down the shelf may serve the purpose of a support for the same. The second part relates to a double hinge by which the folding frame-pieces are connected together so as to allow them to be folded upon each other and leave sufficient space between them for the bedding; and it consists in constructing such hinge with socket joints and stops, which add great strength to such hinges and yet admit of their being constructed so as to occupy less space, and also to very materially reduce their cost.

Figure l is a perspective view of my invention when closed up as a parlor-bed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through Fig. 1, as indicated by dotted lines, showing the bed open.

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the double hinge with socketjoints, as attached to the folding side pieces.

A is the end piece ofthe case, which may 'be framed together, as shown in Figxl. D

and E are the folding-frame or side pieces, which are pivoted to the end pieces at the p point O, their lower ends extending into the base L when folded up, standing vertically in the case A, as shown. B is a cover and shelf connected to the front I by hinges V V', which allow it to be turned down, forming a support for the middle of the framepieces D and E, the part k and t resting upon the door so as to prevent its tipping.

The double-socket hinge has three parts: The piece connect-ed to the inside of the frame-piece D has a socket, F, which. ts a corresponding hole in the connecting-piece S. This socket F is constructed to extend bey youd the inner surface of the piece S, entersocket-joint `in place, while the opposite end is firmly secured thereto by screws. This connecting-piece S is provided with shoulders or H H' of the pieces having the sockets F G bear, when the bed is open, as showniu Fig. `2. R is the top of the lower case, for receiving the folding-frame D E. Upon the top of this case is the toilet-case C, provided with shelves and doors having mirrors M N. This case C may contain a variety of useful toilet articles, and, when required for use; may be placed upon the shelf or cover B, for convenience, and admit of the doors being opened without disturbing the same. The pieces E turn over upon thepieces D, and then the whole turn up vertically, as shown iu Fig. 1, thus forming a parlor-bedpurposes, has the outward appearance of a (liu g being entirely obscured from view.

The double hinges, composed of the pieceS having shoulder-stops P P and the socketpieces F G, are to be constructed of cast-iron, one of the former and two of the latter being required to form a double hinge, as shown in Figs.2and3. u
