AUSTIN ORVIS, OF ELLINGTON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOOD-FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 1 39,418, dated May 27, 1873; application filed November 14, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN ORVIS, of Ellington, in the county of Hancock and State of Iowa, have invented a Flood-Fence, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to that class of fences which pass across streams liable to be flooded with water at one season of the year and obstructed with ice at another. Itwill first be described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation when the gate is fastened down.
A A represent fence-posts, each in two pieces. The lower piece A is sunk into the ground, and has grooves a a at right angles to one another, and at a different elevation. The upper piece A has a tenon which turns on a pivot fastened across the groove a. B B are the rails which are attached to upper sections A to form a panel, and may be made of board alone, of iron alone, or partly of each. C G are bars pivoted to the sides of upper sections A while D D are pins or stakes which are also pivoted to the inner sides of the same post section.
