RAZOR-HUNE.

Patented oer. ii, leer.
Application filed August 16, 1920. Serial No. 403,938.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. McCon- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a certain newand usefulImprovement in Razor Hones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in razor bones and the like wherein a magnet is embedded in a composition stone to impart magnetic properties thereto.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved hone for razors and the like.
A further object is to provide a hone adapted to be magnetized by a permanent magnet therein.
A still further objectis to provide a stone arranged to exert a magnetic attraction, whereby a razor or the like may be sharpened without application of pressure, thereby giving a uniform edge to the razor.
ll accomplish these and other objects by means off the novel device disclosed in the drawings forming apart of'the present specification, wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout said specification and drawings and in which- I Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved hone, the surface being partly broken away to disclose the magnet embedded therein.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section of the hone disclosed in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken side elevation of the hone showing a razor applied in sharpening.
. 1 Tn sharpening razors upon an ordinary hone, much care and skill is required to exert' an even pressure to the blade such as will give uniform abrasion at the heel and toe of the blade, and prevent the forming of a feathered edge.
.To overcome these difliculties T have invented my novel magnetic hone comprising a body portion 1 having smooth abrasive surfaces 2 on the top and bottom thereof for sharpening a razor 3 or other instruments requiring a keen cutting edge. The body 1 is formed by compressing an ad mixture 01f steel and an abrasive, such as corundum, emery or the like, into a suitable thereby becoming magnets capable of imparting magnetism to adjacent particles. In this manner the particles of steel throughout the stone become magnetized and each particle acts as an independent magnet in magnetizing adjacent particles and attracting external objects of a magnetic character. The particles of steel perform the additional function of retaining the magnetism of the .magnet 4 by forming, in effect, a keeper between the poles of the magnet.
In use the razor or other instrument to be sharpened is applied to the hone in the usual manner and reciprocated with opposite sides of the cutting edgealternately contacting with the abrasive surface, but without ap plication of downward pressure, the magnetic attraction exerted by the embedded magnet 4 through the medium of the magnetized particles of steel distributed throughout the hone being suflicient to cause the cutting edge to be firmly held against the abrasive surface. The attraction will be equal at all points alongthe edge of the razor andno skill will be required to prevent excessive abrasion at any one point. The formation of a feather edge due to excessive inclination olf the blade or excessive pres sure will also be eliminated as the razor will be attracted equally at the cutting edge and back thereby holding the razor flat against the hone as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The magneticproperties of my improved hone has the additional advantage of giving life to the razor, that is, giving a more smooth and even cutting edge due to the temporary magnetism imparted to the blade by contact with the stone, the ragged edge observable through amicroscope being Having thus described my invention what caused to assume the erect position assumed I claim as new and desire to secure by Letby iron filings when attracted by a magnet. ters Patent is:
As the details of construction of my im- 1. A razor hone having an abrasive body;
5 proved magnetic hone are so susceptible to and a magnet embedded in said body.
Variation, I do not restrict myself to the 2. A razor hone havinga body comprising precise arrangement disclosed in the drawa composition of an abrasive and a magnetic ings, but prefer to avail myself of such modsubstance; and a magnet embedded in said ifications as will fall Within the scope of body. 10 the appended claims.
