Description

April 16, 1946. w. QTALBERT Y 2,398,566
I SKATE SHARPENER Fi led Aug. 10, 1945 INVEN TOR WILLIAM H- TALBERT ATromvE? Patented Apr. 16, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SKATE SHARPENER William H. Talbert, San Bernardino, Calif.
Application August 10, 1945, Serial No. 610,091 3 Claims. (01. 51-205) This invention relates to a skate sharpener and it is one object of the invention to provide a device of this character which is hand operated and of such size that it may be conveniently carried in a pocket when not in use, thus allowing a person to carry the sharpener with him and sharpen his skates whenever necessary.
Another object of the invention is to provide a skate sharpener which may be conveniently held in a persons hand and skates sharpened by merely lifting a foot and shifting the sharpener back and forth afterengaging the blade of a skate on a shoe in a groove extending longitudinally of the sharpener and pressing the sharpener towards the blade of the skate so that the blade has rubbing engagementwith a file or equivalent sharpening member in the groove.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sharpener having a body formed of longitudinally extending side sections which are firmly but releasably held together and are so formed that files and strips or blocks of carborundum may be firmly clamped between the sections with portions exposed through slots or recesses in the said sections for rubbing contact with the blade of a skate to be sharpened.
Another object of the invention is to provide a skate sharpener which is of simple construction, easy to operate, and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a view looking at one side face of the improved sharpener.
Figure 2 is a view looking at another side face of the sharpener.
Figure 3 is a view looking at the side face of the sharpener opposite that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an end View of the improved sharpener.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken transversely throgigh the sharpener along the line 5-5 of Figure This improved skate sharpener has a body formed of companion side sections I and 2 which are held in engagement with each other by screws 3 passed through openings in diagonally opposite corners of the section 2 and into the section I. At each end the section I is provided with a pin 4 which projects from its inner face at the 0p- Dosite side of the said end of the section from the screw and these pins fit into sockets formed in the corresponding portions of the section 2 to hold the sections against movement longitudiscrews are being applied and tightened. Slots 5 and 6 are formed along outer side faces of the sections I and 2; for the full length thereof to expose surfaces of a file I and a block of carborundum 8. The file and the carborundum fit in cavities 9 and Ill formed in the inner faces of. the two sections, and upon referring to Figure 5 it will be seen that the file and the block of carborundum are in opposed relation to each other with their inner surfaces in fiat face to face engagement with each other. The file and the block of carborundum are of appreciably greater width than the slots 1 and 8 and their transversely rounded outer surfaces are exposed through the slots so that when a skate blade is engaged in either slot it lower edge face will make contact with arounded surface of the element which is to operate upon the edge face of the blade. By first applying the sharpener to the skate with the rounded face of the file in contact with the edge face of the skate blade this edge face of the blade will be filed with a hollow rind and when the sharpener is reversed and the block of carborundum disposed in contact with the edge face of the skate blade the filed edge face of the blade will have very sharp and smooth edges along its sides.
Along opposite sides of the recesses 9 and III the inner faces of the sections I and 2 are formed with fiat surfaces II and I2 for engagement with fiat faces of a file I3 and a block of carborundum I4. The file I3 is overlapped along opposite side edge portion by flanges I5 which are spaced from each other and provide a slot I6 through which the file is exposed for contact with the edge face of a skate blade engaged in this slot and, after the blade has been hollow ground by the file I and honed by the block of carborundum 8 it may be engaged in the slot I6 and side edges of its under edge face flattened slightly. by use of the file I3. The block of carborundum I4 projects from the body of the sharpener formed by the two sections through a slot I'I formed by the spaced shoulders I2 and thi block of carborundum is used for operating upon side. faces of the skate blade and forming a very keen edge as well as removing rust which may have formed upon side'faces of the skate blade. Since the device is quite small it may be readily held in a persons hand and the blades of skates sharpened While the skates are being Worn instead of it being necessary to remove the skates from a persons shoes or remove the skates and shoes to which they are riveted. It is also possible for a nally or transversely of each other while the person to easily sharpen his own skates while on a rink" or frozen pond or other body of frozen water in case it is found that they need sharpening while in use. When the files or the blocks or carborundum become worn to such an extent that they are of no more use the screws 3 may be easily removed so that the sections I and 2 of the body are released and may be separated and new files and new blocks of carborundum set in place between the sections which will then be secured to each other .by replacement and tightening of the screws.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. An ice skate sharpener comprising a body.
consisting of companion side sections, fasteners passing through end portions of one section and into end portions of the other section to detachably secure the sections together, said sections being formed with longitudinally extending slots and with recesses in their confronting inner faces defining a pocket in the body between said sections, a file and a block of abrading material in said pocket having contacting inner faces and having transversely curved outer faces exposed through the slots of the sections for hollow grinding and honing lower edge faces of skate blades, a flat faced file between said sections fitting against the first file and the block of abrading material overlapped by side portions of said sections, the said side portions of said sections being spaced from each and providing a longitudinal slot through which the flat faced file is exposed, and a block of abrading material between side portions of the said sections at the opposite side of the body from the flat faced file having its inner side face abutting the first mentioned file and block of abrading material and having a portion projecting from the body and formed with a flat outer sideface for cleaning and honing side faces of skate blades.
2. An ice skate sharpener comprising a body formed of companion longitudinally extending side sections formed with longitudinally extending slots disposed at opposite sides of the body, the side sections having end portions of their inner faces contacting and between their contacting end portions being formed with internal recesses defining a pocket between the side sections, there being shoulders along opposite side edges of the recesses spaced from each other and providing slots between side edges of the sections, a file and a block of abrading material in said pocket having surfaces exposed through the slots in the sections, and a file and a block of abrading material between the shoulders of the sections disposed at opposite sides of the first file and block and exposed through the slots between side edges of the said sections.
3. An ice skate sharpener comprising a body formed with a longitudinally extending internal pocket and with sets of opposed slot at opposite sides of the body, a file and an abrading block in said pocket having outer side faces exposed through one set of opposed slots, and a file and an abrading block at opposite sides of the first file and block, the last mentioned file being exposed through a slot of a second set of slots and the last mentioned abrading block having a portion projecting outwardly from the body through the second slot of the second set of slots.
