MAXIMILIAN BOOH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,109, dated May 20, 1873; application filed April 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXIMILIAN Boon, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shoe-Fastening, of which the following is a specification:
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my fastening, as applied to a shoe; and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to that class of shoefastenings which embody in their construction a curved bar or link, by folding which, so that its concave side is turned to the foot, the flaps of the shoe are drawn toward each other over the foot, firmly closing the shoe and securely holdingit clasped until the link is unfolded by hand.
My improvement consists in pivoting the folding link directly to a loop of the flap, without any intervening metal plate, and prolongating it beyond the point where it is pivoted to a bifurcated metal piece attached to the other flap, thus providing it with a short lever-arm for convenience in folding and unfolding it. v
p In the accompanying drawing, A represents the shoe, overshoe, or other covering for the foot, to one side lap of which is attached, by leather loops at, the concave oblong link B; to the other the bifurcated piece 0. Both pieces are made of suitable metal and ornamental shape, the transverse parts b, to which the leather connections are attached, being preferably of straight shape to prevent the too rapid wearing out of loops at. The link B is pivoted near the upper part e to the ends of piece 0, swinging freely between the prongs d of piece 0. The upper rounded part c, of link B, serves as a handle-piece in turning link B around its pivoted connection with piece 0, and for opening and closing the links in the shoe. By folding the loop endb of link B into piece 0, the concave sides of both are placed in the same direction, and form, by turning them over on the foot, a buckle-shaped fastening of the shoe.
The curved form of the links is made to correspond with the convex surface of the foot, fitting, therefore, smoothly and closing firmly without hurting or hindering the same in any degree.
By turning the fastening "back so that the links may spread, sufficient play is given for putting on and taking off the shoe, the rapidity.with which it may be adjusted permitting a releasing and free play of the foot whenever it is desirable, without taking ofi' the shoe or annoying by the unsightly swinging of the opened sides.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein described shoe-fastening, composed of the curved bifurcated piece 0, havin g a cross-bar, b, for securing it to one flap of a shoe, and the curved link B, which has a similar cross-bar, b, for pivoting it to the other flap, and is prolongated beyond the point where it is hinged to the piece 0, to form a lever-arm or handle, 0, substantially as specified.
