IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specication forming part of. Letters Patent No. 138,971, dated May 13, 1873; application iiled April 19, 1873.
` To all whom it may concern:
The object of this invention is to simplify, l
cheapen, and, at the same time, improve spring bed-bottoms 5 and it consists in the construction and the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described. s
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a plan view of a bedstead with my improved bottom thereon. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section oi' Fig. l taken on the line x Fig. 3 is a modiiieation of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. 2 on the line y y. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of Fig. 3 on the line zz.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the bedstead. B B are the cleats at the ends of the bedstead, upon which the spring slats are supported. C represents the spring slats; D, the middle slats. E are cross-pieces which rest on the spring slats and support the middle slats, as seen in Fig. 2. The spring slat is made in three pieces, F and Gr, with a supporting slat, H, beneath. The pieces H are connected with the parts F G by means of elastic bands I made of rubber or equivalent material. The cross-piecesE are notched onto the spring slats O, as seenvat J, and the middle slats D are notched onto the cross-piece, as seen at K.
In the middle of the spring Slat a single broad band, as seen in Fig. 3, may be used, attached to the under slat H, as is indicated in the drawing; but I prefer the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, where two elastic bands are employed. The spring slats C are placed next the sides of the bedstead, as seen in Fig. 1, and with this arrangement of the parts the middle or intermediate slats D are made to partake of the elasticity of the spring slats, and the whole to form a-highly elastic and durable bed-bottom, without the use of metallic springs or metallic fastenings. This bed-bottom is easily made, and is simple and cheap.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patspring slats C, middle slats D, and cross-piece E, as and for the purposes described.
NELSON O. WILCOX.
