Borrow.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 16', 1921.
Application filed April 14, 1921. Serial No. 461,203.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SILVERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Ithode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in But- .tons, of .which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buttons adapted for general use upon garments including lapels.
The essential objects of my invention are facility of insertion or removal of the button; the avoidance of mutilation in use; socurity against accidental disengagement;
and inexpensiveness of construction.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are rear perspective views of my novel button with the engaging member in three several positions of operation,
Fig. 4, a rear elevation of the same, Fig. 5, a front elevation of the rotary member, 7
Fig. 6, a rear elevation of the back plate, Fig. 7, a perspective of the rotary member and engaging member,
Fig. 8, an enlarged section on line 8-8 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 9, a section of the button on line 99 of Fig. 2.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
My button comprises, in its illustrated form of embodiment, a front plate 10 and back plate 11 fastened together in'any convenient manner. The front plate may be ornamented orcarry an ornament or stone and in this instance includes a peripheral flange 12 overlapping, as at 13, the back plate 11, which, in this case is provided with a flange 15 resting against the front plate. The respective flanged portions 12 and 15 of the plates have coincident peripheral openings or slots 17 and 18 respectively. Continuous with the slot 18 in the plate 11 is a diametrically disposed slot 20, having if preferred, leading from its inner end and from an intermediate portion respectively oppositely disposed arcuate or branch slots 21 and 22.
Intermediate the front and back plates is rotatably mounted a disk 24 provided in its front face with a diametrical channel 25 and a somewhat shorter diametrically disposed guideway or opening 26 centrally of the latter.
A slidable attaching or engaging member 27 is provided. This is bent up from a length of pointed wire and comprises a horizontal base, ring, or loop 28 slidable in the channel 25, integral with the arm or shank 29 of a yoke or hook 30 whose opposite arm or beak 81 has its outer or free end provided with an outwardly inclined point 32.
To attach my button to a garment the operator slides the member 27 to the position shown in'Fig. 1. The point 32 is passed through a fold of the garment which passes under the yoke 30. Next the button body and the member 27 are moved relatively to each other until the parts reach the position shown in Fig. 2, with the arms 29 and 81 adjacent the slots 21 and 22 respectively. The button is now attached to the garment with suflicient firmness for many practical purposes. In order, however, to preclude any possibility of accidental disengagement the button body is given a quarter turn and the yoke travels to the extremes of slots 21 and 22, as shown in Fig. 3. It will be observed by reference to Fig. 8 that the position of the point 32 beneath the plate 11 is an additional guard against the rearward escape of the member 27 under strain.
I claim v v 1. In a. garment button, a body provided with a diametrical slot, a plate slidably mounted in the body, and a hook member engaging the plate and registering in the slot.
2. In a garment button, a body provided with a slot, a plate rotatably mounted in the body, and a hook member slidably mounted in the plate and extending through the slot.
3. In a garment button, a body provided with a diametrical slot and with, arcuate slots extending from the diametrical slot, an axially movable plate in the body, and a hook slidably engaging the plate at one end and registerable in all the slots.
4. In a garment button, a body provided With a diametrical slot and with arcuate slots branching therefrom, a plate rotatably mounted in the body provided with a diametrical channel and With an oblong opening in the channel, and a hook comprising a base slidably mounted in the channel, an arm upon the'base extending through the opening and registerable with the slots, a beak upon the arm, and an inclined point upon the beak in the body. 7 10 In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
