Description

.UNITED STATES P ATENT oFFIcE.
FREDERICK -H..WI`LI1cox,` or* CHICAGO, ILLIlivoIs, Assrcivon To nnnviv, nnassnitr` a 'ooi/mmm, or cHIcAcro, iLnrNors, n conronnrroiv 0F ILnIivors.
To all whom t may concern Be it knownthat L'Fnnnnnioir H. WILL- oox a citizen of the United States, residing at liicago, in tliecounty offCook and State of Illinois, have invented certain; new f and useful Improvementsin Chimneys forHot- Blast Stoves,of 'which theffollowing is. a specification. 'Y
y' invention relates to means 'inliot blasty stoves of the regenerativetypey and has particular reference to means for connecting the chimneys of suoli hot blast stoves'` applicable to stoves which have individual chimneys. i Y Y f Th'eprimary object ofv my linvention is alie provision of connecting means for the chimneys having a passageway therethrough which will afford an increase of draft for the stove which is on gas, thereby carrying off tlieproducts of combustion more readily and increasing the capacity of the hot blast stove. Y
rA further object of my invention is the provision of connecting'passageways for individual chimneys which -will carry the products of combustion` away from the hot blast stoves and will also keep the chimneys heated at all times whether the-stove is on gas or on blast. Heretofore itrlias been the practice to have individual chimneys for each hot blast stove and owing tothe practice of keeping a stove on blast fora period 0f say two hours, and on gas for` a period of say four hours7 blast the chimney has cooled because of heat radiation to ysuch a point that Vwhen the stove is put back on gasvit takes considerable time for the chimney Ato become heated to a point where the products of combustion will pass throughvreadily. Therefore it `requires a considerable time for theh stove to vbecome working full `capacity because of the inability of the chimney to carry away the products ofl combustion. There are in operation agreat many hot blast stoves of this construction whose chimneys can be connected very easily and very cheaply and `thus give these stoves aconsiderable increase andV is y2O having flared ends 21,
chimneys 14 and 15, so that a passageway 24 whilethe stove was on.

connect the chimneys of hot blast ystovesV which is simple in operation and which can be easily I and quickly installed and at a minimum expense. These 'and Vother objects will be morereadily @understoodfby those skilledfin the art by'ieference to theaccompanying sheet of drawings which is more or lessv diagrammatic andwhich shows my of my invention invention as applied to the chimneys of hot n blast stoves.
* y `Referring specifically tol the. drawings, and
iny which like reference characters refer to like partsfthroughout, hot blast stoves 10, 11 and 12 respectively 'are shown having chimneys 18, 14 and 15 respectively. The chimneys are individual and are set apart from the hot blast stoves. Connecting the chimneys 13 and 14 is a member 16 having flared ends 17 and 18 immediately adjacent to avoid an abrupt right-angle turn for the products ofcombustion with the consequent loss in velocity and an increase in frictional losses. A assage 19 is therefore'provided extending fri-om the chimney 13 through the chimney 14 and through which the products of combustion may pass. A similar member 2 2 connecting the is Vformed which connects the chimneys 14 and 15, is provided. Butterfly valves 24 and 25 are interposed in the passages 19 and 23 for the purpose of shutting oft the flow of products of combustion therethrough, iffor any reason it may be desired to repair the chimneys or for any other reason desired. A
passageway 26 connects the hot blast stove 10 with the chimney 13 and similar passages 27 and 28 respectively lead fromv the hot blast stoves 1l and 12. The products of combustion from the hot blast stoves are controlled by means ofthe usual chimney valves (not shown) interposed in these passages in the usual manner.
In operation the device is exceedingly simple, requiring no attention; however, if
desired, when the stove is first put on blastv the butterfly valves 24 and 25 may be closed until the systemA is started and then it could be opened so that the products of combustion will of' which stoves are on gas.
vthe stacks 13 and 14 respectively in order pass into all of the chimneys regardless Y 110` As illustrating the invention, We Will' say that stoves numbers l0 and l2 are on gas- While number ll is on blast. The passage'V 27 leading from the stove 1l, of course, is closed While the passages 26 and 28 are open, allowing the products of combustion to pass into the base of the chimneys 13 and 15 and cross through the passages 19 and 23,' the butterfly valves 24: and 25being open and ay portion of the products of combustion will therefore pass outward through the stack le. It vvill be evident, therefore, that by means'of my invention the full chimney capacity of three stoves is available at all times f regardless of Whether one or more of the stoves 1s on gas at the same time.`
Ihile I have described more or less precisely thedetails of construction, Ido not Wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate4 changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substi-v tution of equivalents as circumstances may in g from the spirit or scope of my invention.
I claim: y
l.. In combination'` Withghotblast stoves, of `chimneys and -110621115 Vhaving passages therethrough connecting the i chimneys.
2. Inycombinatioinhot blast stoves, chim- 'neys for said stoves, andvpassages connecting the said chimneys. y
3. In combination, hot blast stoves, chimneys for .said stovesthrough which the products of combustion may pass, means for connecting said chimneys- -having passages therethrough, and-means in said passages for closing the passages.
Y 41:. In combination hot Yblast stoves, of
.chimneys forsaid stoves, means for connect- .ingL the chimneys, the sald means having flared ends Wherebylthe products Ofcombustion are prevented from malringfabrupt turns in passing from one! chimney to an-` other.
