Specification of Letters Patent, Patented All g. 1921.
Application filed March 22, 1920. Serial No. 367,671.
To rzZZeu/lome'tmay concern: I
Be it known that I, ARTHUR S. Pnox, a citizen oftheUnited States, residing at Lawrence,'in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Caddy-Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full,
dear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled-in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing. had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot'this specification.
This invention relates to a caddy box; that is, a container from which farinaceous materials such as cakes, crackers or the like may be dispensed, the principal object of the invention being to provide a box of'this character in which the contents are pro-:
tected from dust, dirt, insects and the like, while on a shelf, but which may be easily and quickly opened when the contents are to be removed.
The box is preferably constructed of flexible material, such as straw board, paperoid, paper or fiber board and comprises flaps adapted to cooperate to frictionallyhold a swinging cover in closed position, and for sealing the opening when the cover is closed.
able manner to comprise the sides 1 and 2,
the ends 3 and 4, and the bottom 5. The ends 3 and 4 have inturned flaps 6, to which the inturned flaps 7 and 8 of the sidesl and 2 are secured in the usual manner, a
preferred construction being one in which the back 3 and the body part are formed from separate blanks and connected by adhesive strips 9, although this detail of construction is unimportant.
Forming part of one ofthe end walls, for example, the back 3,'is a cover ortop 10, which is foldablerelative to the wall 3'to swing into and 'out of closing position. The cover 10 is provided with straight side edges and with a yielding, depending flap 11, having a friction face 12 to engage a' friction face 13 on theyielding inner'pro jecting flap wall 4.
The sides 1 and 2 are provided {with inv V 14 carried by the front end EN OFFICE].
wardly projecting sealing flaps -16*and 17',
whiclrare adapted to liesnug'ly againstthe inner face ofthe cover '10. When the cover is in sealing position, the flap 13 has a tendency to project downwardly while the flaps 16 and 17 tend to extend in an upward,
inclined position, as clearly shown in' Fig I. WVhen the cover 10 is moved-into closing position, the face 12 of the flap 11 will contact with the face 13 of the flap 14: and since the flap 14 tends to spring inwardly, due to the resilient connection with the wall 1, and since the flap 11 tends to spring outwardly, due to its resilient connection with the cover '10, the two flaps will hear one against the other with suflicient pressure to cause a frictional contact to hold the cover 10 in closed position. flaps 11 and lt constitute a lock for the cover 10,"since the flaps 16 and 17 haye a tendency to press upwardly as. soon as the cover 10 is in closedposition. These flaps 16 and 17 will bear against the under face ofthe cover 10 but not with suflicient pressure to cause a release of the cover flapll from the flap 14:. It will be'apparent, though, that the upward pressure of the'fla'ps 16 and 17 and the inward pressure of the flap "14 will cause the box to be sealed around the entire edge of the opening 18 when the In other words, the
opening is closed by the cover 10. Therefore, the box will be sealed against dust, dirt, insects and other objectionable vmatter and an efficient temporary seal will be provided 'without the necessity of employing special fastening devices. I
I amv aware that boxes of this general construction have been formed with inwardly projecting flaps on the walls thereof which cooperate with inwardly projecting flaps on a cover, but I am not aware that previous to my invention it has been contemplated to provide a cover with a friction flap adapted to engage a complementary flap on the end of the box to hold it in closed position, nor to provide upwardly projecting side flaps cooperating with those just described so as to constitute a seal.
While I have described a form of the invention wherein the cover or sealing end is located at the top of the box, such specific location is not intended as a limitation of the scope of the invention, as the cover may be located on any end or side of the box, or more than one may be employed, if desired.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A caddy box consisting of a bottom, sides and endswith a swinging cover carried by one of the ends, inwardly projecting yielding flaps on the upper edges of the sides, a flap on one end of the box and beneath the side flaps, and a depending flap on the free edge of the cover having a friction face for engagement with the face of the flap on the end of the box.
2. A caddy box consisting of a bottom,
sides, ends and a swinging cover connected to the upper edge of the box, an inturned, friction flap on the end of the box, and a depending friction flap carried by the cover and engaging the inturned flap on the end of the box, whereby the box cover will be held in closed position.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a box consisting of sides, a bottom and ends, an integral cover on one of the ends having a depending flap, and an inwardly projecting flap on the end of the box opposite to that supporting the cover, said flaps cooperating by frictional contact to secure the cover in closed position.
at. A caddy box consisting of a bottom, sides and ends, a cover yieldingly supported by one end of the box and having straight sides with a depending flap at its free end, a cooperating flap carried by one end of the box and frictionally engageable with the flap on the cover, and inturned, upwardly disposed side flaps carried by the box.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
