TOUZZ whomy t may concern Be it known that l, THUnsroN MATHENY, a citizen of the United States, residing at The Plains, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have inventedL certain new and useful improvements in l/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the acc mpanying drawing. Y
rl`his invention relates to improvements in wrenches, one object of the invention being the provision of a quick acting wrench adapted to be quickly manipulated for gripping and holding a nut during the tightening or releasing thereof.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a wrench, the nut gripping head of which is so disposed as to be operable at various angles so that the present wrench may be used similarly to a ratchet wrench in confined spaces and upon nuts of Varying sizes.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a wrench which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction and thoroughly efficient and practical in use.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the complete wrench.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with a portion of the side frame removed, showin@` the respective cooperation of the jaws and limiting ratchet, dotted lines illustrating' one of the extreme positions that the jaws are permitted to take.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail View of a modified form of jaw for use upon pipes and the like.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the handle which is provided with the reduced portion 6 and the further apertured terminal 7 which constitutes one of the terminals of the present wrench. A closer plate S is adapted-,to cover the recess side of the body and is provided with the apertured terminal 9 which cooperates with the apertured terminal 7, above referred to. Mounted in the body of the wrench between the plate is a springprojected thumb piece 10, which acts upon the pivoted locking detent 11, whose free end is adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 12 of the disk 13, which is mounted for rotation upon the supporting pin or bolt 14 of the wrench. This Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial To. 362,850.
disk is further provided with the teeth 15, the purpose of which will presently appear. n disk 16 is mounted for swinging movenient upon the stud or pin above referred to, and carries the fixed jaw 17 and is provided upon one face with the recess 18 and the short longitudinal slot i9 so that the L- shaped movable jaw 2O will have the guiding portion 21 thereof slidable in the rst recess, while the limiting pin 22 thereof is iitted for sliding movement in the second recess. ln this way the jaws are permitted bodily movement together upon the pivot, while the movable jaw has independent movement tov and from the fixed jaw, this movement being imparted thereto by means of the teeth 23 which cooperate with theteeth 15 of the relatively iixed disk.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that any force applied tothe handle of the wrench will cause the teeth of the disk and sliding jaw to coperate to tightly grip the nut to be acted upon and that by reason of the thumb actuated detent and the ratchet tie jaws may be placed in any desired angulation, as shown in full and dotted lines in Fig. 2.
`What claim as new is:
A wrench including a body having a sloted end, a pin mounted therein, a member carrying iixed aw mounted upon said pin for oscillatory movement, said member being providedL with a guide way and a slot, an lshaped sliding jaw having its guiding terminal mounted in the guide of the fined jaw to limit the movement of the sliding jaw, a disk moiuited for limited rotation and provided with gear teeth on a portion of its periphery for engaging the sliding aw whereby when the oscillatory member is moved the sliding` jaw will be moved to and the Cined jaw, ratchet teeth formed upon the remaining periphery of said disk, a pivoted locking detent mounted in the body and adapted to engage one of the ratchet teeth to lock the teeth against movement and in adjusted position, and a spring actuated thumb-piece also mounted in the body for controlling` the movement of the locking detent.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signature.
