WRENCH.
1 048 994, Specification of Letters Eatent. Patented Deg 31 1e12,
Application filed October 11,1912. Serial No. 725,198.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Luowrn Mionusz, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Holden, in the county of Logan and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of my invention are to provide a wrench of that type commonly styled a monkey-wrench, with simple and effective means for rapidly moving the adjustable jaw of a wrench, and to provide the wrench with a novel locking mechanism for holding the movable jaw in adjusted position.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a strong and durable wrench of the above type, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is inexpensive to manufacture, and efficient as a gripping device for rotating nuts.
With the above and other objects in View the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the wrench, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line lV-IV of Fig. 3.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a handle 1 having the inner end thereof provided with a longitudinal recess or bore 2 that is rectangular in cross section. Slidably mounted in the recess or bore 2 is a shank 3 having the outer end thereof provided with a jaw a presenting a flat gripping surface 5 at the front side of the shank. The front side of the shank is provided with transverse ratchet teeth 6 and the inner end of the shank is provided with a screw 7 that extends through a longitudinal slot 8 formed in the side of the handle. The outer end of the screw 7 has a flat head or finger piece 9 that rides against the side handle having a longitudinal slot formed of the handle 1, and it is through the metherein in communication with the bore of dium of this finger piece that the shank 3 said handle, a screw carried by the inner can be rapidly shifted, in either direction in end of said shank and extending through the handle 1. i said slot and having a finger piece to facili- The front side of the handle 1 is provided tate moving said shank, a lever pivotally with sets of apertured lugs 10 and 11, also with a jaw 12 that is located at the outer end of the handle, said jaw presenting a flat gripping surface 18 that confronts the gripping surface 5 of the jaw 4; and cooperates therewith in gripping the facets of a nut.
Pivotally mounted between the apertured lugs 10 by a transverse pin 14 is a lever 15, said lever having the inner end thereof enlarged to provide a hand grip 16. This hand grip has the inner face thereof recessed, at 17 to receive the end of a compression spring 18 that is located in a recess 19 provided therefor in the front side of the handle 1. The outer end of the lever 15 is bifurcated, as at 20 and pivotally mounted in the bifurcation of said lever by a pin 21 is the reduced inner end 22 of a locking arm 28. This arm is pivotally mounted by a transverse pin 24 between the apertured lugs 11 and the outer end of said arm has a tooth 25 to enter an opening 26 provided therefor in the front side of the handle 1 and engage the ratchet teeth 6 of the shank 3.
There is sufficient play between the connected ends of the lever 15 and the arm 23 to permit of said arm being shifted by pressing upon the hand piece 16 of the lever. The arm 23 is held by the lever 15, through the medium of the spring 18, whereby the tooth 25 will remain normally out of the opening 26, consequently the shank 3 can be freely moved within the handle 1, but is limited in its movement by the screw 7 engaging the ends of the slot 8. After the jaws 4 and 12 have been placed in engagement with the facets of a nut, the hand piece 16 of the lever 15 can be gripped with the handle 1 and the tooth 25 shifted through the opening 26 to engage the ratchet teeth 6 and hold the shank while the wrench is being used for rotating the nut.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a handle having the outer end thereof provided with a longitudinal bore, a toothed shank slidably mounted in the bore of said handle, a jaw carried by the outer end of said shank, said mounted upon the front side of said handle, adapted to extend through the front side 10 a compression spring located in the front side of said handle and engaging the inner side of said lever at the inner end thereof, a locking arm pivotally mounted upon the front side of said. handle and having the inner end thereof loosely connected to the outer end of said lever, and a tooth carried by the outer end of said locking arm and of said handle to engage said toothed shank.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
