To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL RQFRAIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.

A further object of the invention is to provide in conjunction, with the tumbler locking means, other means for holding one or more of the tumblers in shackle releasing position and at the same time holding the tumbler locking means in a non-functioning position. j

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed. f

I The padlock illustrated in the accompany- I ing drawings resembles the ordinary conventional padlock, comprising a padlock casing 1, a shackle 2 connected to the casing 1 by a pivot 3, and oppositely arranged tumblers 4 and 5 which may be said to face each other, thesame being arranged to engage shoulders 6 and 7 onopposite faces or edges of the nose8of the shackle 2. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, two stacks or series of tumblers 4 and 5 are. employed as shown, the same being adapted to'be operated by the projections of the key used in connection with the padlock. The tumblers 4L are mounted on a common pivot 9 and the tumblers 5 are likewise mounted on a common pivot 10. The tumblers 4 and 5 are yieldingly pressed to its closed position by means of the spring 14.

In carrying out the present invention I 1 make use of a tumbler-locking dog 15 which is mounted on a pivot 16 in the casing 1.

The, dog 15' is of substantially bell-crank formationjand one arm thereof, in the pre ferred form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is formed withan angle slot oran L shaped slot 17 which receivesa lug or projection 18 on the, adjacent tumbler 5. In add'ition'to the locking dog 15 I further employ a detent 21' which is mounted on a pivot 22 in the lock casing. The detent- 21'is formed with a slot 23 receiving a fixed stud or post 24 fast in the casing 1.

' The detent also comprises a projection or arm 25 which is adapted to engage behind a' stud or projection 26 on'the tumbler 5 above refererd to. Inaddition, the detent is formed with anotch 27 to receive one end I of the spring 20, hereinabove referred to. Byreference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will now bejseen thatthespring2O acts to move the slotted arm of the; locking dog 15 toward the key post 28, and at the same time acts to move the free end ofthedetent 21 away from said key post.

-The operation of the lock mechanism is as follows: Starting with the parts in their locked position as shown in Fig. 1, the key, which has a'hollow or tubular shank, is inserted through the usual keyhole in the lock case into engagement with the post 28, and is then turned. The first effect of turning the key is to move the slotted arm of the locking dog 15 away from the post 28 untll the stud or projection 18 passes around the angle of the slot 17. The key then operates to press the tumblers 4t and 5 away from each other. This results in releasing the shackle 2 and at the same time causes the projection 18 to move to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position said projection 18 serves to prevent the locking dog 15 from swinging toward the post 28. During the turning movement of the key, the stud 26 moves away from the detent 21 sufficiently to enable the arm or extension 25 of the detent to pass behind the stud 26, the detent being moved to the last named position by means of the spring 20. In this position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, a part of the detent 21 lies in the path of the nose 8 of the shackle 2. Therefore, when the shackle 2 is pressed to its locked position, the nose of the shackle presses against the detent 21 and forces the latter inwardly toward the post 28 until the arm or extension 25 moves out of engagement with the stud 26. This permits the tumbler or tumblers 5 to swing inwardly into locked engagement with the shackle 2, or in other words to assume the locked position indicated in Fig. 1. When the parts are in their locked position as shown in said Fig. l, the tumbler or tumblers 5 cannot swing out of locked engagement with the shackle because the stud 18 is in one of the angular portions of the L-shaped slot 17. This prevents one or more of the tumblers from being jarred or accidentally moved to unlocking position, it being practically impossible to open the lock without the aid of the proper key. 29 represents a filler plate arranged between the pivots 9 and 10 and serving to hold the adjacent ends of the tumblers 4 and 5 against sliding movement on the pivots 9 and 10.

Instead of providing the tumbler 5 with a projecting stud 26, the tumbler illustrated at 5' in Fig. 3 may be cut away or otherwise shaped to provide a shoulder 30 for engagement with the detent 21.

Instead of forming the locking dog 15 with a slot and providing a stud 18 on the adjacent tumbler 5, the alternate arrangement may be resorted to, as illustrated in Fig. 4, wherein the L-shaped slot 17 is formed in the tumbler 5 and a stud or projection 18 is provided on the locking dog 15. The result will be the same in both forms of the invention.

A slidable detent 31 may be used in place of the pivoted detent hereinabove referred to, as shown in Fig. 5. In suchvcase the sliding detent 31 may have slotted ends to form, in tOl'ljUIlClllOl] with studs or posts 32 and 83, guiding means for such sliding detent. Under the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, one or more of the tumblers 5 may be formed with a shoulder 34: to be engaged by the detent 31 to hold the tumbler 5 in shackle releasing position.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a padlock, the combination with the case thereof, of a shackle, pivoted tumblers arranged to engage opposite faces of the nose of theshackle, and a pivoted detent which engages one of said pivoted tumblers when in shackle-releasing position and holds it in said position against accidental displacement.

2. ln a padlock, the combination with the case thereof, of a shackle, pivoted tumblers arranged to engage opposite faces of the nose of the shackle, a tumbler locking dog pivotally mounted outside of the tumblers, and a detent which engages the locked tumbler and holds the same in shackle-releasing position.

3. In a padlock, the combination with the case thereof, of a shackle, pivoted tumblers arranged to engage opposite faces of the nose of the shackle, a tumbler locking dog pivotally mounted outside of the tumblers, and a detent which engages the locked tumbler and holds the same in shackle-releasing position, said detent when in functioning position being in the path of the nose of the shackle so as to be tripped thereby in the closing movement thereof.

In a padlock, the combination with the case thereof, of a shackle, pivoted tumblers arranged to engage opposite faces of the nose of the shackle, a tumbler locking dog pivotally mounted outside of the tumblers, a detent which engages the locked tumbler and holes the same in shackle-releasing position, and a spring common to said dog and detent to hold the dog in tumbler-locking position and also hold the detent in its functioning position.
