The present invention relates to locks and embodies, more speciiically, an improved form of tumbler lock wherein one or more `tumblers are provided, the actuation of the tumblers being controlled by elements coacting therewith to prevent actuation of the tumblers except under predetermined conditions, such elements, as well as the tumblers, being operated by a key having a properly formed cut portion.
More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a lock of the above character which is substantially pick-proof by reason not only of a combinated tumbler controlling member but of the combinated tumbler itself, one of L15 these elements being actuated by the key in one position thereof, while the other of the elements is actuated upon movement of the key to a different position. By forming the lock in such fashion that these two elements may be normally l20 biased in a given position, the lock is rendered substantially pick-proof inasmuch as, after an instrument is inserted in the lock to actuate one of the elements in one position of the lock, a second tool must be inserted to actuate the other g5 of the elements in a second position.
An object of the invention, accordingly, is to provide a lock of the above character having a plurality of combinated elements which are operated by the key in different positions of the key.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock of the above character wherein the Vlock is provided with a greater number of combinated elements than there'are tumblers provided in the lock.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock of the above character wherein a plurality of combinated elements are provided in the lock for each tumbler thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide 40 a combinated lock having a barrel and an improved mechanism for locking the same in a desired position within a housing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a barrel release mechanism which is operated by 45 a tool in the form of a key, the lock structure being such that this tool can only be inserted to release the barrel when the key has been mo-ved to a predetermined position in the lock.

The housing may be counterbored at 22 to receive the enlarged front end 23 of the barrel, an inner peripheral groove 24 being formed within the housing to facilitate locking of the barrel therein. The barrel is formed with an end wall 25 upon which an outwardly projecting stud 25 is formed to be' connected to any mechanism which is to be operated by the lock. The housing 29 is formed with an elongated slot 21 within which the lock tumblers hereinafter described are received.
In order that the lock tumblers may extendv into the slot 21, the barrel 2| is likewise formed with a slot 28.
Against the end wall 25, a disc 29 is secured, the disc being formed with a notched projecting portion 30 which is received within the slot 28 to prevent rotation of the disc. An aperture 3| is formed centrally of the disc 29 to receive the end of the key and provide a bearing therefore when the key is fully inserted into the lock. In order that the barrel may be eiectively latched within the housing 29, the disc 29 is cut away at 32 to receive a pivoted latch bolt 33, one end 34 of which extends through a slot 35 formed in the barrel 2| and is adapted to engage the peripheral groove 24. A sp-ring 35 engages the opposite end of the latch bolt 33 in order to urge the same normally into a latching position, the latch bolt 33 being pivoted upon a hinge pin 31 as clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5.
The enlarged front end 23 of the barrel receives a plurality of plates 38, 39 and 49, retaining them in assembled position by means of a cover plate 4| which is formed with a cylindrically flanged portion 42 to engage the enlarged end portion of the barrel. In order that the plates 38, 39 and 49 may be effectively positioned, the barrel is counterbored at 43. Each of the plates 38, 39 and 40 is provided with a projecting lug 44 which is received within a slotted portion of the enlarged end of the barrel and, in the specific lock structure shown, the outer plate 40 is formed with a segmental notchV 45 to receive the cooperating portion 46 of the shank of a key 41. In thi-s fashion, turning motion of the key 41 is transmitted to the barrel 2| through the shank 46, plate 49, and projection 44.
The lock is provided with any desired number lof tumblers 43 which are slidably mounted upon adaptor plates 49 having spaced guide lugs 5U formed thereon between which the tumblers 48 slide. Adaptor plates 49 are mounted within the key barrel 2|. Cooperating with each adaptor plate 49 is a gate 5| having ngers 52 'which eX- tend through cooperating slots 53 formed in the adaptor plates 49 and engaging cooperating slots 54 in the respective tumblers 48. It will thus be seen that the fingers 52 prevent sliding movementY of the tumblers between the guide lugs 59 of the adaptor plate 49 except when the fingers 52 are spaced opposite notches 55 formed in the corresponding sides of the slots 54. When the iingers 52 are positioned opposite the notches 55, the tumblers 48 may be moved slidably between the guide lugs 50 until the fingers 52 .are in the position illustrated in Figure 18. Figure 1'7 illustrates the position of the fingers 52 at which time the tumbler may be moved from its locking position shown in Figures 16 and 1'1 to its unlocked position shown in Figure 18. Figure 16 illustrates the position of the fingers 52 in the slots 54 by means of which the tumblers are effectively locked in their locking position.
Also formed upon each gate 5| are arms 59 which are provided with lingers 51. The adaptor plates 49 are provided with slots 58 within which `notched portion 98.
the arms 59 are slidably received, the ngers 51 projecting beyond the plane of the tumbler 48. In order that the gates 5| may be locked in such position as to lock the tumblers 48 in their locking position, a rotatable key slot plate 59 is provided, the plate 59 being formed with a key slot 99 of a profile corresponding to the cross sectional proiile of a key to be used to unlock the lock, additional arcuate slots 6| and 92 being formed in the key slot plate 59. The arcuate slots 5| and 62 terminate in radial slots 63, the fingers 51 being received within the slots 6|, 62 and 53. It will thus be seen that the gates 5| prevent the release of the tumblers 48 as long as the fingers 51 lie in the radial slots 63 in the position illustrated in Figure 16. When the fingers 51 lie opposite the corresponding slots 5| and 62, the key slot plate 59 can be turned to cause the fingers 51 to enter the slots 9| and 62.
In this fashion the lingers 51 of the gate 5| lock the rotatable 'key slot plate 59 against movement in the normal locked position of the tumbler, as ilustrated in Figure 16. When the proper key is inserted in the slot 69 of the key slot plate 59, the gate 5| is moved into such positio-n that the ngers 51 no longer lock the rotatable key slot plate and rotation of the key and plate is thus permitted. Figure 17 illustrates the position of the mechanism when the proper key is inserted through the key slot plate and Figure 18 illustrates the position of the mechanism when the key has been turned through degrees. As before stated, the insertion of the key not only moves the fingers 51 to a position opposite the arcuate slots 9| and 62 but also moves fingers 52 opposite the notches 55, as illustrated in Figure 1'7, thus permitting the unlocking movement of the tumbler.
A spring 63 engages one of the arms 56 and one end of the tumbler 48 to maintain the elements normally in the position shown in Figure 16. To this end, a stud 64 is formed on the adaptor plate 49, the spring being mounted over the stud to properly position the same.
As shown, the tumbler 48 is formed with an aperture |55 having a cam edge 66, an arcuate edge 61, and a notched portion 68. The aperture 55 is so positioned that it receives the cut Dortion of the key when the latter is inserted in the lock, as illustrated in Figure 16. As the key is turned, one edge thereof engages the cam surface and moves the tumbler downwardly as illustrated in Figure 18. In this position the edge of the cut portion of the key distant from the cam surface 96 is positioned adjacent the It is possible of course to cause the notched portion 53 to serve as an abutment by means of which the turning force of the key is transmitted to the lock barrel.
In order that the latch bolt 34 vinay be re-iV moved from the groove 24, a special tool 69 is provided having an operating rod 10 which ls adapted to be inserted into an opening 1| formed in the face of the lock. Discs 38, 39 and 40 are formed with openings which align with the opening 1| and the adaptor plates 49 are also formed with openings 12 which are aligned with the aforementioned openings. It will be observed that the rotatable key slot plate 59 forms an obstruction to the insertion of the shaftI 1D lthrough the aforementioned openings and, in
order that such may be accomplished, a notch 13 is formed in the rotatable key vslot plate at Ysuch point that it will be aligned with the aforementioned apertures when the rotatable key slot plate has been turned through 90 degrees. In this fashion, when the key el is inserted in the 'lock and turned to the position shown in Figure 18, the shaft 'Eil may be inserted through the apertures and the sloping end M thereof is forced against the arm 33 to the position illustrated by the circle in dot and dash lines of Figure 5. In such position, the barrel 2l may be removed from the housing 2B.
While the invention has been described with specific reference to the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, it is not to be limited, save as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
' l. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved With respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions by turning of a key, and means to lock the tumbler against movement While no key is inserted in the lock.
2. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions by turning of a key, means to lock the tumbler against movement vlvhiie no key is inserted inthe lock, and key engaging means to actuate the last named to unlock the tumblers prior to actuation of the tumbler by the key.
3. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, tumbler locking means to lock the tumbler against movement While no key is inserted in the lock, a movable key slot plate having a key slot formed therein to receive the key, and cooperating means on Said tumbler locking means and the last named plate to prevent movement of the last named plate prior to insertion of a key.
4. A cylinder look comprising a lock barrel, a
tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, tumbler locking means, a mov-v able key slot plate having a key slot formed therein to receive the key, cooperating means on said tumbler locking and the last named plate to prevent movement of the last named plate prior to insertion oi a key, and means to urge the tumbler locking means and the last named means into a normal locking position.
5. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, tumbler locking means, a movable key slot plate having a key slot formed therein to receive the key, and cooperating means on the tumbler locking means and the last named plate to prevent movement of the last named plate prior to insertion of a key, said tumbler locking means and last named means being formed to permit actuation thereof by a proper key to unlock the tumblers.
6. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions by turning of a key, and tumbler locking means, the tumbler locking means being formed to be moved to an unlocked position upon insertion of the key into the lock prior to actuation of the tumbler by the key.
7. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, and tumbler locking means, the
tumbler locking means being formed to be moved to an unlocking position upon insertion of a key into the lock and the tumbler being formed to be moved to an unlocking position upon turning of the key.
8. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, tumbler locking means, a movable key slot plate having a key slot formed therein to receive the key, and cooperating'means on said tumbler locking means and the last named plate to prevent movement of the last named plate prior to insertion of a key, said tumbler locking means and plate being formed to be positioned in unlocked position upon insertion oi a key into the lock. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, tumbler locking means, a movable key slot plate, and cooperating means on said tumbler locking means and the last named plate to prevent movement of the last named plate prior to insertion of a key, said tumbler locking means and plate being formed to be positioned in unlocked position upon insertion`of a key into the lock and the tumbler being formed to be moved to an unlocking position upon turning of the key.
i0. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, tumbler locking means, a movable key slot plate, means to urge the tumbler locking means and tumbler to normal locked positions, and cooperating means on said tumbler locking means and the last named plate to prevent movement oi the last named plate prior to insertion of a key, said tumbler locking means and the last namedplate being formed to permit actuation thereof by a proper key.

A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and'adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidab-ly, a gate adjacent the adaptor and a4 finger on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement With respect to the adaptor, said gate being formed to be moved to an unlocking position when a key is inserted in the lock prior to actuation of the tumbler by the key.
l2. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidably, a gate adjacent the adaptor, a nger on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement, and a rotatable key slot plate formed with key slot therein and cooperating with the gate and tumbler to prevent movement of the key slot plate.
13. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidably, a gate adjacent the adaptor, a ringer on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement, a rotatable key slot plate cooperating with the gate and tumbler and formed with a key slot therein, and cooperating means on the last named plate and gate to prevent movement of the plate.
14. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidably, a gate adjacent the adaptor, a nger on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement, a rotatable key slot plate cooperating with the gate and tumbler and formed with a key slot therein, and cooperating means on the last named plate and gate to prevent movement of the plate, the tumbler, adaptor, gate and plate being formed With apertures to receive a key and the gate being adapted to be moved to an unlocking position With respect to the tumbler and key slot plate upon insertion of a key in the lock.

A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidably, a gate on the side of the adaptor opposite from the tumbler, a nger on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement, a rotatable key slot plate adjacent the tumber and having a slot formed therein, and a nger on the gate engaging the slot in the plate to lock the plate against movement, said tumbler, adaptor,
vgate and plate being formed With apertures adapted to receive a key.
16. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved With respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidably, a gate on the side of the adaptor opposite from the tumbler, a nger on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement, a rotatable key slot plate adjacent the tumbler and having a slot formed therein, and a finger on the gate engaging the slot in the plate to lock the plate against movement, said tumbler, adaptor, gate and plate ybeing formed with apertures adapted to receive a key, said gate being formed to be moved to an unlocking position upon insertion of a key in the lock and the tumbler being formed to be moved to an unlocking position upon turning of the key.
17. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried therebyT and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidably, a gate on the side of the adaptor opposite from the tumbler, a ringer on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement, a rotatable key slot plate adjacent the tumbler and having a slot formed therein, and a nger on the gate engaging the slot in the plate to lock the plate against movement, said tumbler, adaptor, gate and plate being formed with apertures adapted to receive a key, said gate being formed to be moved to an unlocking position upon insertion of a key in the lock and the tumbler being formed to be moved to an unlocking position upon turning of the key, and a recessed disc on the lock barrel adapted to be engaged by a shank on a key to transmit turning motion from the key to the barrel,

A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a housing receiving the barrel, a tumbler carried by the barrel and adapted to be moved with respect thereto to locking and unlocking positions, tumbler positioning means in the barrel, releasable means to hold the barrel in the housing, and means associated with the tumbler to control the movement thereof, the lock, tumbler positioning means, and last named means being formed to permit the introduction of a member to release the holding means for removal of the barrel from the housing from the front of the lock.
19. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel,
a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidably, a gate adjacent the adaptor, a nger on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement, a rotatable key slot plate cooperating With the gate and tumbler and formed with a key slot and an aperture therein, a housing for the barrel, and releasable means to hold the barrel in the housing, the face of the lock and the tumbler, adaptor and gate being formed to permit an element to be inserted through the aperture in the plate to release the holding means for removal of the barrel from the housing.
20. A cylinder lock comprising a lock barrel, a tumbler carried thereby and adapted to be moved with respect to the barrel to locking and unlocking positions, an adaptor in the barrel, means to mount the tumbler on the adaptor slidably, a gate adjacent the adaptor, a linger on the gate adapted to lock the tumbler against movement, a rotatable key slot plate cooperating with the gate and tumbler and formed with a key slot and an aperture therein, a housing for the barrel, and releasable means to hold the barrel in the housing, the face of the lock and the tumbler, adaptor and gate being formed to permit an element to be inserted through the aperture in the plate to release the holding means for removal of the barrel from the housing when the key is inserted in the lock and turned to a predetermined position.
