`IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-PROTECTORS:
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,774, dated April 15, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, GEORGE HUNT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Metallic Broom-Protectors, of which the following is a specification i In the use of corn brooms it has been found that because of the absence of some support between the stitching and the fraying end of the broom, the broom Vwas bent beyond its strength or elasticity and broken, while the shoulders or prominent portions of the broom, being exposed to friction against walls and other objects, aided to break the stalks and detach them from the body of the broom in like manner.
The object of my invention is to protect the corn or like broom, and while it does the same amount of work as ordinary make, it lasts four times as long; the nature of which consists in encompassing the body of the broom with an adjustable metallic band, which is held in place by metallic straps which extend downward, and being corrugated at their upper ends, are bound by wire around the neck of the broom, said straps being provided with holes, through which and through the belt a Wire brace is inserted, firmly connecting the straps with the belt and making the belt adjustable as the broom wears.

A is the broom, B its neck, G the handle, and D the stitching. E is the belt; F F are the straps; G, the corrugated ends of the straps, and H the wire fastening. I are the holes in the belt; K K, corresponding holes in the straps for raising the belt as the broom wears; and L are the wire braces which pass through the broom, securing straps, belt, and broom together.
The broom-protector may be made of any other suitable material, while I prefer metal.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The broom-protector herein described, composed of the belt E, straps F F, wire fastening H, and wire braces L, when used in combination with the broom A, constructed and operating for the purpose set forth.
