To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ORA R. CnonGH, a citizen of the United States, res1d1n at Ladysmith, in the county of Rusk and tate of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Pointers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a dev1ce for pointing the lead of pencils and the pr1nc1- pal object of the invention 1s to provlde a device for holding a strip of sandpaper and provided with means whereby 1t may be suspended from the drawing board or table or rest upon the table.

Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the sand paper may be easily renewed whenever desired.

This invention also consists in certaln other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, 1llustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention 1n detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote l1ke or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the dev ce.

Figs. 6 and 7 are views showing how the strip of sand paper is placed on the dev ce.

In these drawings 1 indicates the cyllnder, around which the strip 2 of sand paper is placed. This cylinder is formed of two semi-circular parts which are held together by the plates 3, secured to the ends of the parts by the fasteners 4. It will be seen when the two parts are placed together the central opening 5 will be formed and the plates are located to one side of this opening. The strip 2 is placed around the cylinder and its end edges are placed between the meeting faces of the two parts of the cylinder at one side thereof and this strip is made of sufiicient size as to project within the opening 5, as shown. placed in said opening 5 with the cylinder resting on said shoulder. This handle will clamp the edges of the sand paper strip agalnst the wall of the central opening so as to hold the strip around the cylinder. This handle will also act to expand the two parts of the cylinder and thus make the strip tightly fit the cylinder. A flexible member 8 is secured to the upper end of said handle by an eye screw 9 and the free end of this member carries a loop which may be placed in engagement with any suitable form of fastener on a table, such as indicated at 10 in Fig. 5.

In placing the strip of sand paper upon the cylinder I first separate the two parts of the cylinder and bend the strip around the same with one of its end edges bent over the upper fiat face of said part, as shown in F1g. 6. The other part is then placed on the strip with its bottom edge engaging the bottom edge of the first part. The strip is then bent around the second part and its end carried across the fiat upper face and into the opening, as shown in Fig. 7. The two parts are then closed and fastened with a metal plate and fasteners on each end and the handle member inserted.

By rubbing the lead of the pencil over the strlp of sand paper the same may be uickly and easily pointed and if the device 1s suspended from a table as shown in Fig. 5 the dirt will fall on the floor instead ofiupon the table and it will be out of the way when not in use. If desired I may place a pair of thumb fasteners 4' on one end of the cylinder which will act with the fasteners 4 as supportingmeans when the device is placed upon a table.

It will be seen that one or more sheets may be placed on the device and they are securely held in place without gluing and they are easily removed when worn.

It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and noticeable features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a cylinder formed of two parts, a strip of sand paper placed around the cylinder and having its ends clamped, between the two parts and a handle memberpassing through the cylinder and engaging the end' strip of-sand paper placed around the cylinder and having its endedges passing be tween portions of the two parts, a plate at each end of the cylinder for holding the two 10 parts together, ahandle member having a shoulder thereon and passing within the cylinder and engaging the end edges of the strip and flexible supporting means secured to the handle. 15
