WILLIAM GEORGE SEMPLE, OF NORTH TONAVTANDA, NEW YORK.
IRONING-BOAED.
i,37et,398.
Application filed June 21,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Gnonon SnMrLn, oi": the city of North Tonawanda in the county of Niagara, in the State of New York, United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in iron ing-Boards, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ironing boards and the object of the invention is to devise an ironing board which can be detachably clamped to any projecting shelf, table or window sill without disfiguringthe same.
lVly invention consists of the parts constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my device partly in section.
Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 represents an elevational detail of the leg portion of the device.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
1 is the board portion provided with a longitudinal slot 2 in one end thereof. 3 is a projecting ledge. l is an upper leg portion having a notched upper end 5, said upper leg portion being hinged by the pin (3 to the bracket 7 secured to the board portion 1. 8 are serrations on one side of the upper leg portion. 9 is a lower leg portion, the lower end of which is adapted to engage the floor 10. 11 is a U shaped member hinged to the lower leg member 1 and adapted to straddle the upper leg portion 4, the cross bar oi the U shaped member 1 being adapted to engage the respective serrations 8 of the upper leg portion. 12 are guide pieces suitably secured to the upper leg portion l.
The device is applied as follows:
The slotted end of the board portion 1 is placed under the projecting ledge 3. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

lower leg portion 9 is then adjusted respectively to the upper leg portion 8 so that the notched upper end oi the upper leg portion l bears firmly against the upper edge of the projecting ledge.
It will be seen that the more pressure that is put on the board portion 1, the inner will be the grip on the ledge and conse quently the board portion will be firmly clamped to such ledge when in use.
It will further be seen that the ironing board can be readily applied to ledges of different heights from the floor as the leg portions can be adjusted relatively to each other to allow for the different heights of lodge. in addition the device can be applied to ledges oi? different thicknesses. By so adjusting the leg portions relatively to each other, it can be arranged so that the inclination of the same is varied which will open or close the gap between the slotted end or the board portion 1 and the notched upper I end of the leg portion to suit the different thicknesses of ledge.
lit will be seen that by disengaging the U shaped member 11 from a serration on the upper leg portion the device can be instantly removed from the ledge.
What I claim as my invention is:
In an ironing board, the combination with the board portion having a' longitudinally slotted end of an upper leg portion having a notched upper end, said upper leg portion extending through the slot in the board portion an d hinged to such board portion, guide plates on the sides of the upper le portion, teeth on one face thereof,
to i a lower leg portion slldably engaging the upper leg portion and a U shaped member hinged to the lower leg portion and straddling the upper leg portion, the cross bar of the U shaped member adapted to engage the respective teeth on the upper leg portion.
WILLIAM GEORGE SEMPLE.
