LOCKING BOLT.
Application led March 14, 1922.
To all whomy it may concern.'
Be it known that I, STEPHEN TN. BAND, a citizen ofthe United States, and a. resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Locking Bolt, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved locking bolt, especially adapted in use as a means for holding or clamping plates or the like together without the use of the customary threaded bolt structure commonly employed for this purpose.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means which may be conveniently used for permanently or temporarily clamping plates or the like and the existing novelty renders the same especially adapted for use where it is desirab e to clamp two or more plates together preparatory to rivetl ing or otherwise fixing them together.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the salient features, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the `block which forms a part of the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view of the wedge, Figure 3 is a view in vertical section on the line 3 3 Figure 4, Figure 4 is aI vert-ical section on the line 4-4 Figure 3 and Figure 5 is a plan view of the key which is used as a locking element.
Referring now to the drawing in detail (A) and (B) represent plates with which the device may he used as a means for clamping them together either temporarily or perman- -y ently. The plates, especially those used in shipbuildin or in other like uses, are usually provided with rivet openings at spaced intervals along the edges or in other places in the body thereof. Sometimes the over-- lapping edges of the plates are clamped together and then again the two or more thicknesses ofplates are iixed together. any rate, in using the device the bolt (1) is passed throu h two or more registering openings in the plates with the head (2) thereof providing a bearing on the underside of the lowermost plate. The opposite end of the bolt is preferably constructed with a reduced portion (3) leaving a button (4) at its extremity with the reduced portion (3) made to cooperate with the locking element such as the slotted key (5) the same having an opening (6) made to slip over the button (4) and a slotted opening (7) made to straddle the reduced portion (3).

y() represents a wedge which is adapted to be introduced between the top one of the plates (A) and (B) and the block (9) to effect the desired clamping of the plates. Any niunber of the washers (8) may he used to build up a space between the plate (A) and the locking element, for instance, the key (5) so that the wedge may cooperate with the block (10) to produce the desired results.
The wedge (10) is made with an open ended slot (11) so that the same may st-raddle the bolt and in order that the block (9) may effectively cooperate with the wedge in producing the clamping effect the block is made with V-shaped slots (12) arranged parallel to one another on the underside of the block and made to receive the angular tracks (13) on opposite sides of the slot (11) of the wedge. Arranged preferably along the outside edges of the wedge (10) are a series of teeth (14) the same slanting toward the greater thickness of the wedge and made to receive the headed ends (15) of the spring fingers (16) formed along two outer edges of block These spring lingers (16) are cut out of the material of the wedge (9) and the spring quality of the same is. used to permit the heads (15) to ride over the teeth (14) of the wedge when the wedge is wedged between the block and theplates by driving the same with a hammer. wedge is struck with the hammer at the thickest end of the same and when the device is to be released the key (5) is removed.
It will be readily appreciated that the spring quality of the finger (16) will enable the wedge (10) to he held firmly in any desired wedging position relative to the block and since the heads (15) oI the fingers are firmly seated in the teeth there will be no likelihood of the same slipping loose regardless of the force which is imposed on the device.
