Description

C. ALGRIM.
BOLT CLAMP FOR VISE JAWS.
APPLICATION FILED APR.27, 1921.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921. 52 .1.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOLT-CLAIM? FOR VISE-JAWS.
Application filed April 27, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ALGRIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Clamps for Vise- Jaws, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bolt clamps for vise jaws.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide improved means for holding a headed bolt.
Another object is to provide improved means for holding bolts of any practical length so that a given length of the threaded end, or the end to be threaded, will project beyond the "holding means accessible for threading or for removing a nut therefrom.
Another object is to provide an improved means for holding a bolt which will locate the bolt in a true horizontal position and which will clamp the shank of the bolt without materially engaging the head.
Another object is to provide a pair of clamping jaws for holding carriage bolts, machine bolts, la screws, and the like, headed rivets, pint le pins, screws and other similar objects, and which clamping members may be inserted between the jaws of an ordinary screw operated vise for occasional use or the jaws of the vise may be made to contain the advantageous features of the clamping members to directly engage and hold the bolts.
Other, further and more specific objects of the invention will readily occur to persons versed in the art, from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a pair of my improved clamping members, as they appear when in a vise, holding therebetween an unthreaded carriage bolt.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same showing the clamping members engaging a machine bolt.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a similar view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In all the views the same reference characters are used to indicate similar parts.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
Serial No. 464,827.
The bolt clamping device consists of two duplicate clamping members 10 and 11. Each clamping member has in its confrontmg face a series of notches 12 to receive heads of bolts, or to permit the heads of bolts to lie therein so that the clamping members may engage the bolt shanks to clamp and hold the bolt.
Each notch has a right angular portion 15 to accommodate square headed machine bolts 13, the head 14 of which lies within the opening between these portions of the notches as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. These notches also engage the head in such fashion that the bolt is firmly held to resist any effort to move the bolt axially, as when pressure is applied to the bolt, as in the act of threading the projecting end. The notch is laterally protracted into a more deeply extended triangular portion 16 to permit the button head 17 of a carriage bolt 18 to enter and to prevent axial movement of the bolt when its shank is clamped between the clamping members.
Between the notches 12 shank clamping surfaces 19 are located. Dowel pins 20 of which there may be any desired number are secured in one clamping member, as at 21, and pass freely into the other member, as at 22. These pins serve to maintain the notches 12 of the clamping members in register and serve as horizontal supports for the shank of the bolts.
Rings 23 may be placed on the dowel pins 20 to prevent the clamps from being entirely closed at any one time. The rings are of less width than the diameter of the smallest bolt to be held between the members.
The series of like notches are made in the clamping members to accommodate bolts of varying lengths.
Shoulders 24 may be made at the upper outer edge of each clamping member to serve as supports on the jaws of the vise so that when the clamping jaws are disengaged from the bolt, to remove the bolt, the clamping members will not fall from between the jaws of the vise.
Fig. 5 shows the clamping members resting on the jaws 25 of a vise, as when in use.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bolt clamping and holding device, two like bolt clamping members having in their confronting edges a series of registering notches, each notch providing a part to receive the head of an angular-head bolt and another part to receive the head of a round button-head bolt to prevent axial movement of a bolt; dowel pins near the bottom edges of the clamping members to hold the notches in register and to serve as bolt rests, to hold a boltin horizontal position'and means between adjacent notches to engage the shank of a bolt and clamp it therebetween.
2. In a bolt clamping and holding device, tWo like bolt clamping members having in their confronting edges a series of spaced apart registering notches to receive the head of a bolt and to prevent axial movement thereof; a longitudinal series of spaced apart dowel pins near the bottoms of the members extending from one member into the other to hold the notches in register and to serve as rests to support the bolts in horizontal position and a shoulder extending longitudinally of each clamping member near its top edge to rest upon the jaws of a viseto support the device on the vise.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribed my name.
