WRENCH.
Specication of Letters Patent. y
Application `iledctober 29, 1920. Serial No. 420,509.
To (ah 'w Imm t may concern Be it lrnown that we, GEORGE DURGAN and Huisnr Mrnus, citizens of the United States, residing at Lubec, in the county of Vilashington, State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Virench, of which the following :is a specification.
rlhis invention rela-tes to wrenches, lit being the primary object of the invention to provide a wrench having a ratchet head, whereby the operator may rotate a nut or bolt to position the same, by reciprocating the handle portion of the wrench.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form 'of head, whereby when the same is applied to a nut or bolt, the jaw portion thereof will be closed to eliminate any possibility of the tool becoming displaced from the article under operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which, will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coinbination and arrangement of parts and in the details of constructionhereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from `the spirit of the in vention.
Referring to the drawing: U
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational vlew of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view taken. on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 illustrates a side elevational view, of a wrench, the head portion thereof being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the wrench includes a handle portion 5 and a head portion 6, the head portion comprising a circular member having inwardly extending flanges 7 formed at its edges to provide a support for the movable section 8 which forms a part of the head, the circular member being however, secured to the handle 5 in any suitable manner.
The circular member is also cut away as at 9 to provide an opening to register with the jaw of the movable section so that the wrench may be positioned over a nut or the like wherein. the upper surface of the nut e structedi This movable section 8 is provided with a plurality of notches 10 between which pawls Vl2 carried by s the handle 5, the pawls 12 having inclined surfaces 13 which are disposed to permit the pawls to ride over the teeth 11 when the handle is moved in one direction, but caused to abut against the teeth 11 when the handle 5 is moved in the opposite direction to accomplish the movement of the movable section.
'As shown, the pawls 12 operate through suitable openings provided in the handle 5, each pawl being provided with an operatmg handle 14, there being provided coiled spring members 15 encircling the stems 16 of the pawls for normally urging the pawls into engagement with the teeth.
The movable section 8 is out away to provide a jaw 17 at one side thereof, the opposite side of the section 8 being curved and adapted to accommodate the movable jaw 18, which movable jaw 18 is provided with an opening to accommodate the bar 19, which has one of its ends embedded in an opening in the jaw section 17, while the opposite end thereof is positioned within a suitable opening formed directly opposite the first mentioned opening, and in the body of the movable section.
Formed on the bar 19 are the teeth 2() which coperate with the spiral rib 21 formed on the adjusting nut 22, which is positioned within a suitable opening formed in the movable jaw 18, so that movement of the adjusting nut 22 will result in a relative movement of the movable jaw 18 toward and away from the stationary jaw y 17 to adapt the wrench for use on articles of various sizes.
From the foregoing it is obvious that when the wrench is positioned around a nut, the jaw section thereof substantially houses the nut to eliminate any possibility of the jaw becoming displaced from the nut while the same is being rotated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a wrench, a circular head having inwardly extending flanges andhaving a cut out portion formed laterally thereof, a rotatable section disposed within the head and positioned between the flanges, said rotatable section having a out out portion IatentedMar. 29, 1921.
adapted to register with the out out portion of the head, a stationary jaw and a movable jaw Carried by the movable section, a toothed bar havingV connection With the opposite walls of therout out portion of the movable section, said movable jaw having an opening to accommodate said bar, said bar having teeth, means carried'by the movable jaw and coperatingwith the teeth of the bar to adjust the movable jaw With re spect to the stationary jaw, and lmeans for rotating thle movable section Within the head.
In testimony that We Claim the foregoing as our own,y We have hereto ailixed our 15 signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE DURGAN. HENRY MYERS.
