Description
Y. NAGANO WRENCH Filed April 18.A 1524 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 1,8, 1925.
UNITED STATES YASHUHIKO NAGANO, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
WRENCH.
Application led April 18, 1924. Serial No. 707,484.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, YAsHUHrKo NAGANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools, particularly to wrenches, and has for its object the provision of a wrench which is adjustable for use in turning bolts, nuts and other articles of widely different sizes.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a wrench equipped with means whereby the opening in its jaw or jaws may be carried in size depending upon the specific article or element to be engaged thereby.
An additional object is the provision of a tool of this character which will be very simple and inexpensive in manufacture, convenient and easy to use, positive in action, eflicient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is an elevation at right angles to Figure 1 showing one of the movable elements swung into inoperative position,
Figure 8 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown the wrench as comprising an elongated body 10 of any suitable size, shape and material and provided at its ends with enlarged heads 11 and 12. The intermediate portion of the body is formed preferably with a trapezoidal shaped slot 13 which is capable of engagement upon bolt heads or nuts of very small sizes to effect turning movement thereof. The heads 11 and 12 are formed with jaw openings 14 and 15 respectively of different sizes.
The essential ,feature of the invention lies in the provision of -a plurality of plates or vblade members 16 and 17 which are located plate or blade or in the face of the head, as
the case may be.
Assuming that the wrench has been constructed and assembled as above described it will be apparent that a certain size of nut or bolt head may 'be engaged within the jaw opening 14 or 15. To enable the device to be engaged upon a larger element, it is merely necessary to swing one or more of the movable plates or blades into inoperative position as shown in Figure 2, whereupon the size of the jaw opening is increased by the thickness of the movable element thus swung away. hen all the plate or blade elements are in their normal position, it is apparent that the projections 22 will operate to prevent them from swinging accidentally out of place.
While I have shown and described both ends of the wrench as provided at both sides of the jaw openings therein with the movable elements, it should of course be understood that they may be provided at only one end or at only one side of a jaw openn ing, this detail being immaterial. It isvalso true that I reserve the right to make such other changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
I claim:
A wrench comprising` a body having a head formed with a jaw opening and with slots at the opposite sides of the opening, a plurality of resilient filler plates located at opposite sides of the jaw opening` and eX- tending into said slots, said filler plates normally lying within the jaw opening to define the minimum size thereof, a pintle with corresponding depressions and j brcjccy tions and the sides of the jaw opening` being likewise 'formed with depressions adepted to receive the projeeeions on the outermost liller plates whereby to maintain fLhe filler plates againstniovement, said plaies being individually swingable in either direction out of alinementwith the jew opening whereby the size of the opening 'is increased, the ends of said slots being beveled and adapted to be engaged by the filler plates whereby to hold the saine in a Certain angular position with respect to the body.
In testimony whereof I iny signature.
