Description

I. NO. 137,280. I PatentedApriI1,l873.
. AM. PHOTU'LITHOGRAPHIE ca MY (ossuRNEls pencsssf.)
NtTnn STATES CHARLES C. ALGEO, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT m SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,280, dated April 1, 1873; application filed March 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. ALGEO, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement on the sash-lock for which Letters Patent were granted to me November 12, 1872; and it consists in the formation of a groove in the cam all around that part of the same which is immediately on the inner side of the upper sash when the two sashes are locked, which prevents the cam from being thrown back by a knife or other sharp instrument inserted from the outside between the sashes.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window, showing my improved sash-lock in position on the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sash-lock; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the cam, showing the groove in the same.
A represents a window-frame with upper sash B and. lower sash (J. D represents the box of the sash-lock with the cam G pivoted in the same, and the whole inserted in a recess formed at or near the lower end in the middle rail of the upper sash B. Of the cam G, a is the projection which strikes against the outer side of the top rail of the lower sash, and b is the part which projects over the lower sash and locks the two sashes. This cam is constructed and operates in precisely the same manner as described in my patent above referred to, with this exception, that in the for mer case the cam was of the same thickness throughout; and hence if a knife or other sharp instrument were inserted from the outside between the sashes, the said instrument would meet the smooth surface of the cam, and it would be possible to throw the cam back, and thus raise the lower sash. To obviate this difficulty I now form a groove, '5, around the cam at the base of the part 12 immediately in front of the projection to, so thatany instrument inserted from the outside between the sashes will necessarily get into this groove, and it will be found impossible to throw the cam back, the front side or shoulder of the groove preventing the cam from being moved back of the point of the instrument inserted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The groove z formed in the cam G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
