SAW GAGE. APPLICATION FILED APR-Z6, 1920.

UNITED STATES PATENT orrice.
SAW-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
Application filed April 26, 1920. Serial No. 376,812.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. Hrrn, a citizen of the United States, residin at Santa Maria, in the count of Santa l3arbara and State of Californla have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Gages, of which the following-is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in saw blades and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in controlling or limiting the extent or" penetration of the working edge ofthe saw blade, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general charac ter comprising novel and improved means whereby the same may be readily applied.
to the blade of a saw.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is carried directly by the blade of the saw and which is provided with means whereby the gage element may be adjusted transversely of the blade, and more particularly with respect to the working edge of the blade.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved saw gage whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevatiomillustrating a gage constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken through one of the posts or arms herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings S denotes a hand saw of a conventional type with which a gage constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention is adapted to be employed. As herein embodied my improved gage comprises an elongated member M preferably L-shaped in cross section throughout the major portion of its length and wherein the opposite end portions 1 'thereof are substantially.
square in cross section. The upper face of each of the portions 2 is provided with a series of longitudinally spaced openings 3 in each of which is adapted to be threaded an end portion of a post or arm 4 of requisite length. By providing a series of openings 3, the post or arm 4 may be adjusted longitudinally of the member M in accordance with the requirements of practice and particularly to compensate for saw blades of different lengths.
It is also to be particularly noted that the post or arm 4 coacting with one end portion 2 of the member M is of a greater length than the post or member 4 coacting with the opposite end portion 2. This difference in size is provided in order that requisite coaction maybe had with the standard type of saw blade, although it is to be understood that if preferred both of the arms or posts 4 may be of substantially the same length.
Fiach of the posts or arms 4 is provided therealong substantially the entire length with a flattened portion or face 6 on which is provided the linear graduations 7, preferably denoting inches and fractions thereof. Coacting with each of the posts or arms 4 is a block 9 provided with an opening 9 through which the coacting post or arm 4 coacts and whereby the block 9 is capable of adjustment longitudinally thereof. Threaded through one end of the block 9 is a binding screw 10 having direct contact with the post or arm 4 and which serves to effectively lock the block 9 in desired position on the post or arm 4 intermediate its ends. Each saw block 9 is provided in its under face with a transversely disposed slot or groove 11 open at its opposite ends and which slot 11 is adapted to receive the upper or back marginal portion of the blade of the saw. Threaded through the end portion of the block 9 adjacent the slot 11 is a binding member M substantially in close contact with the adjacent face of the blade of the saw. The member'M is of a length to extend substantially entirely along the blade of the saw and affords effective means whereby the extent of penetration of the working edge of the blade of the saw into the work is limited or controlled. The graduations 7 materially facilitate the requisite positioning of the member M in applied position with respect to the toothed or working edge of the saw blade- It is also to be understood-that each of the blocks 9-is engaged with the upper and back marginal portion of the blade of the saw by sliding movement in a direction inwardly of the coactmg postor arm 4.
Substantially inidway its lengtlnthe member M is provided with the upstanding arch or body member 15 having its extremities welded or otherwise engaged with the member M with one edge of said member 15 sub stantially flush with the outer or contacting face of the flange 1a of the member M.
At substantially its longitudinal center,
the member 15 is provided with an opening 17 through which is insertible an outwardly disposed shank 18 arranged axially of a post or arm 19.- The inner end portion of the shanklS is defined by an outstanding annular shoulder or flange 20 arranged at the lower portion of the post or arm 19 proper, and the portion ofthe periphery of the shank 18' arrangedlwithin the opening .17 free and unobstructed so that thepost or arm 19 may be readily rotated. The outer end portion of the shank 18 is provided with the peripheral threads 21 having engaged therewith the nut or holding member 22, whereby the post or armv 19 is effectually maintained inapplied position. i
The post 19 is provided with the periphera]? threads 23 extending substantially the entirelength thereof- The post 19 has threaded thereon a block 24 having produced inits under face at one side of-the post'or arm 19 a slot 25 extending transversely thereof and open at its opposite ends. This slot 25 is also adapted toreeeive the upper and back marginal portion of the blade of the saw. Threaded through the end of the block 24 adjacent the slot 25 V is a binding screw 26 having direct contact particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious thatmy invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the'principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason 'I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise 'arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed. r
The invention having been set'forth. what is claimed as new and useful is 2- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a saw gage comprising an elongated member adapted to be positioned along the face of the blade of a saw, outstanding posts carried by the opposite" end portions of the member adapted to extend transversely of the blade of the saw, blocks slidably mounted on the posts and engageable with the back marginal portion of the blade of the saw, means for locking said blocks to the blade, a-post rotatably engaged with the central portion of the member, and a block threaded upon said post and engagable with the back marginal portion of the blade of the saw. p
2. As a new article of manufacture, a saw gage comprising an elongated member adapted to be positioned'along the face of the blade of a saw, posts carried by the opposite end portions of the member adapted to extend transversely of the blade of the saw, blocks slidably mounted on the posts and provided with recesses to receive the back marginal portion of the blade. of the saw, means for locking, said blocks to the blade, an arched'meniber secured to the central portion of the first named member, a post rotatably supported by said arched member and extending in the same general direction as the first named posts, and'a bloel: threaded upon said last named post and engageable with the back marginal portion of the blade of a saw.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a saw gage comprising an elongated member adapted to be positioned along the face of the blade of a saw, posts carried by the opposite end portions of the member adapted to extend transversely of the blade of the saw, blocks slidably mounted on the posts portion of the blade of the saw, said last and engagable with the back marginal pornamed block being provided with means ention of the blade of the saw; means for lockgaging the blade to lock said block to the 10 ing said blocks to the blade, a post rotablade of the saw.
, tably engaged with the central portion of In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my the member, and a block threaded upon said signature. post and engageable with the back marginal GEORGE M. HITE.
