Description
F eb. 10, 1925.
y 1,525,813 E. P. KING COMBINATION SQUARE Filed May 24, 1922 Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
EDWARD 1?. KING, OF ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO THE L. S. STARRETT COMPANY, OF ATHOL, MASSACHUSETTS, A. CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATION SQUARE.
Application filed May 24,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD l?. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, county of Anderson, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Squares, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to combination` squares, and particularly to an attachment for preventing the sliding stock or head from being disconnected from the blade. In the use of the combination square it is sometimes desirable to reverse the stock on the blade. `Where the stock is completely detachable from the blade, as in the ordinary combination square, the mechanic is apt to drop the stock or the blade while making this adjustment.
To the end therefore of providing a combination square in which the stock will be positively prevented from being disconnected from the blade and will yet be capable of reversal upon the blade when desired, I have devised my present invention.
The construction and operation of my device, together with a selected embodiment which well illustrates the principles involved, is described and shown in the accompanying specification and drawings, and the characteristic features of novelty are particularly pointed out in the appended claim. Throughout the specification and drawings like reference numerals are applied, and in the drawings:
Fig. l is an elevation of a combination square in accordance with my invention, and showing in dotted lines the stock moved to positions permitting it to be reversed upon the blade.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail, partly in section, particularly illustrating the construction for preventing complete disengagement of the stock and blade, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, of Fig. 2.
I have indicated at 1 the graduated blade and at 2 the slidable stock or head of a combination square of standard type. The blade 1 is provided between its edges in one face thereof with the usual longitudinal 1922. Serial N0. 563,392.
groove 8, and the stock or head 2 is provided with the usual clamping bolt l engaged in said groove and effective when tightened to hold the adjustment of the stock and blade relative to each other.
According to my invention, the groove 3 terminates short of the ends of the blade in an enlargement 5 which prevents complete ydetachment of the stock from the blade and permits the stock to be swung about the blade at this point and reversed thereon.
In use, when it is desired to reverse the stock upon the blade, the clamping bolt is loosened by unscrewing the tightening nut '6 thereof and the head moved endwise along the blade until the Guiding projection 7 of the clamping bolt lodges within the enlarge ment 5 at the end of the groove. The stock may then be swung about the blade and at this point reversed thereon without bodily detachment therefrom.
Various modifications in the construction and operation of my device may obviously be resorted to all without departing from the spirit of my invention if within t-he limits of the appended claim.
That I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination, a blade having a longitudinally extending groove terminating short of the blade end in-an enlarged opening, a stock having a continuous slot in one end thereof permitting said stock to straddle said blade and have continuous bearing thereon throughout the length of the bottom of said slot, said stock being adjustable relative to said blade and having a releasable clamping member provided with a portion disposed for sliding travel in said groove of the blade to permit longitudinal adjustment of the stock relative to the blade and for turning movement in said enlarged opening of the blade to permit the stock to be reversed upon the blade without bodily detachment therefrom.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD P. KING.
