To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL LQBURRISS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Southport, in the county of Brunswick and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calipers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in calipers, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character which may be employed with convenience and facility in connection with interior or exterior measurements.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved. device of this general character wherein is included a scale whereby a single instrument may be employed for. dual purposes.
The invention consists in-the details of construction and in the combination and I better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying draw1ngs, wherein-- Figure 1 is a view in plan of a caliper constructedin accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 1s an en larged sectional view taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Fig.1.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw-. ings, 1 denotes a flat body preferably of metal and having one margin straight, as at 2, and provided with the scale graduations 3 which may be in accordance with. inches and fractions thereof or in accordance with the metric system. The opposite end of the body 1 is provided with the communicating depressions 4 adapted to receive the extremities of the legs 5, said extremities being substantially semi-circular in top plan with their peripheries beveled to engage the beveled walls 6 of the depres-' sions 4 and the body 1 has produced thereonv around the wall '6 the scale graduations 7 for caliper readings and each of the legs has producedadjacent its curved endthe thread line 8 serving as-an index to coact with the adjacent graduation 7. The lines 8' are disposed at the same ,side of the pivots 9 of the legs 5 audit will therefore be perceived that the right leg will'be employed for exterior caliper use while the left leg will-be neous movement of the second leg and thesame degree of movement. v I
The legs 5 are preferably reversely bowed and have their extremities provided with the outwardly disposed pointed extensions 11, each being arranged at the same angle relative to its coacting 'leg. At right angles to the extensions 11, the free ends of the legs 5 are provided with the heels 12 substantially rectangular in form, the corners of which serve as exterior and interior contact points. In practice, it is preferred that when the heels 12 are in contact that five teeth be disposed above the bight of the curved ends of the le s and three below. This gives the limit 0 measuring capacity of the device. It is also necessary in order play to allow one leg to p that when one leg passes the other so as to remove the instrument when used for in-,
terior work, that the teeth still be in contact and the'efl'ect'ive operation of the -instrument be maintained.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to-be obvious that a caliper constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly 'well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it maybe assembled,
