Description

(No Model.)
WQ GLITSGH.
GALIPERS AND DIVIDERS. No. 410,274. y `Pazented Sept. 8,-1889.,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTHER GLITscII, or GENEVA, SWITZERLAND.
CALIPERS AND DIVIDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,274, dated September 3, 1889. Application illcd March 14, 1889. Serial No. 303,357. (No model.) Patented in Belgium August 24, 1888, No. 82,998.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTHER GLITSCH, of Geneva, Switzerland, have invented an Improvement in Compasses, of which the following is-a specification.
.The Compasses are intended for use in describing circles and in measuring external and internal diameters, and also in measuring angles; and 'Letters Patent for this invention have heretofore been granted to me in Belgium, deposited August 24:, 1888, and issued September 15, 1888, No. 82,998.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is adiagra'in illustratin g the manner in which the Compasses are used in describing circles. Fig. 2 represents the improved Compasses in use as calipers for measuring the diameter of a cylinder. Fig. 3 illustrates the manner in which the Compasses are used as Calipers for the internal diameter of a pipe. Fig. 4 shows the compasses as used for measuring the thickness of an angle-iron. Fig. 5 indicates the manner in which the Compasses are used for determining the Center of segmental openings. Fig. 6 is a diagram'illustrating the use of the instrument in determining the center of a Cylinder. Fig. 7 represents the point of the Compasses as used for engraving or scratching lines. Figs. 8 and 9 represent the Compasses as folded u p, and Fig. 10 indicates the manner in which the Compasses are to be used for ascertaining the included angles between two lines.
The Compasses are made of four principal parts. gether at C, and the leg D is pivoted to the end of the bar A, and the leg I-I to the end of the bar B. I also provide the additional legs E and G, pivoted to the respective ends of the bars A and B. The legs D H and E G form pairs. The end of the leg D terminates with a penetrating-point d and a lateral projection cl. The end of the leg His represented as terminating in alateral projection. By this construction the Compasses are adapted to being used The two bars A and B are pivoted tofor Calipering either external or internal diameters, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. `The leg,
to make use of the Compasses in making drawings or in taking measurements from machinery, and when the Compasses are not made use of they may be folded up into a small space, as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9.
Upon the end of the bar A and around the joint C is a sector B', divided up into degrees and parts of degrees, and there is a projecting point upon the bar A, so that the number of'degrees in the included angle between the bars A and B can be read upon this sector.
I Claim as my inventionl. The Combination, with the bars A and B, pivoted together, of the legs pivoted to the outer ends of the bars A and B, and sockets having lateral projections and adapted to it upon the ends of the legs, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the bars A and B, pivoted together, of the pairs of legs pivoted to the outer ends of the bars A B, one pair of said llegs having permanent lateral projections, and sockets with points or lateral projections and adapted to fit upon the ends of the other pair of legs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTHER GLITSCH.
