Description
0.). THOMPSON- TURNBUCKLE. I APPLICATION FILED MAY 7, I918.
Patented Sept. 30, 19.19.
CLIFFORD J.,THOMPS01\T, OFMIAMI, FLORIDA.
TURNBUCKLE.
Application filed May 7, Serial No. 233,085..
To all whom it may concern V Beit known thatI, CLI'F'FQRD J. YTHOMP-IH soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Turnbuckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in turn buckles and is especially adapted for use in connection with the stay Wires of a flying machine, the primary object being to lock the turn buckle after it hasbeen adapted so as to keep the wires tau-t. I
It is also the object of the invention to combine with the locking means further means for decreasing the wind resistance during the travel of the machine, thereby reducing the wind resistance by forming the locking means so as to fill the air pocket created at the rear of the buckle, thereby preventing formation of a vacuum.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in Which:
Figure 1 is a view'in elevation of a turn buckle constructed in accordance with the present invention, the ends of the stay wires being connected thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. A
Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and i Fig. 4: is a like view on the line &4: of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the improved turn buckle, is designated in its entirety by the reference character 10, while at 11 is shown the adjacent ends of the stay wires such as are usually employed in the construction of an airplane or flying machine.
The turn buckle 10 includes a barrel 12, which is provided with a longitudinal bore 13, the latter having at each end oppositely disposed threads 14, for engagement with the threaded shanks 15 of the eyes 16, to which the stay wires 11 are secured in the usual manner. The barrel is also provided with a transverse opening 17 for the reception of a suitable implement for the purpose of adjusting the buckle.
Each of the shanks 15 has secured thereon a ratchet disk 18, the teeth of each of these disks being reversely arranged. Secured to or a r y he ba re 1. i a pr ng-ba 18,:the saidbar beingsecured at apprenin'a'tely its central point with the ends 19 extending beyond the ends of the barrel 12. These ends are provided with elongated teeth 20 WlliCll engage the teeth of the ratchet 18, the latter being of approximately the same diameter as the ends of the barrel 12 and the teeth extending within the diameter of the said barrel so as to provide a positive engagement. The spring bar is shape in cross section, the apex of the angle being outwardly disposed with respect to the barrel 12. When inposition this bar is arranged upon the rear of the machine facing away from the wind and acts to decrease the wind resistance due to the barrel 12 ordinarily forming a pocket and creating a vacuum at the rear.
It will be seen that the foregoing invention provides a positive lock for the turn buckle by preventing any accidental relative movement of the parts after adjustment, due to vibrations permitting however, any future adjustment made necessary by the possible stretching of the wires 11.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is reserved to make such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A turn buckle embodying a barrel having a bore provided with right and left hand threads, eyes having threaded shanks engagea-ble with said bore, a ratchet disk secured upon each of said shanks and a spring tooth engageable with each of said disks to hold the ,parrts against relaltive movement.
2. A turn buckle embodying a barrel having a bore provided with right and left hand threads, eyes having threaded shanks engageable with said bore and resilient means carried by the barrel and engageable with means carried by the shanks whereby relative rotation of the shanks and barrel may be provided in one direction only.
3. A turn buckle embodying a barrel havin a threaded bore provided with right and left hand threads, eyes having threaded shanks enga 'eable with said bore, a ratchet disk secured spring bar carried by the barrel and ex upon each of said shanks, a
wedge shaped, that is, it is of triangular Copies 01 this intent may be obtained for tending longitudinally thereof and-enelongated tooth-located at each end of the bar and engageable With the disks to hold the; parts against relative movement. 4. A turn buckleembodying a barrel hav ing a bore providedwwith right andleft hand threads, eyes having threadedehanks' en-- gageable With said bore, a ratchet disk ;se
cured upon each of said shanks, a) spring bar having a tridngultr cross sectional shape. and secured to. the barrel with the apex of the triangle disposed outwardly and an elo11-' gated tooth located at each end of the bar and engageable with the disks to hold the parts against relative movement. In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
