Description

UNITED is'rarreslv PATENT ors-Ica *l MILDRED DOROTHY eoonRIcK,-(Now BYMARRIAGE MILDRED renom-LY! REY-Nonna) 0F GLINTONVILLE, WISCONSIN.
HAT.
T 0 all whom t may concern `Be ity known that I, MILDRED D. GooDRIoi', 1 a citizen ofthe United States, residing atr Clintonville, in the county of Waupaca and State of Wisconsin, have invented newand useful Improvements in Hats, of-which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates toJ hats'of the tam oshant`er type. It is a well known fact that hats of this character materially muss and disarrange the hair of the wearer because the crown portion of the hat lies in direct contact with the hair, and by reason of the eXibility of the crown it drags over theV hair when the hat is being taken off resulting in a material disarrangement of the hair. In a knitted or crocheted tam-oshanter, the elastically yieldable head band increases the disarrangement of the hair because of the fact that the band is forcibly drawn down over the head in putting on the hat, and is forcibly removed from the head in consequence of which the band is dragged over the hair materially disarranging it.
The object of the present invention is to enable the convenient application and removal of the tam-oshanter type of hat in such a manner as to'avoid disarrangement of the hair of the wearer. This important object is accomplished by providing the hat with a slit extending from the outer edge of the head band diametrically inward therefrom, suitable means being provided for detachably connecting together the edges of the slitted portion of the hat so as to hold the hat in proper shape when on the head of the wearer. By reason of the detachable connection, the edges of the slit may be separated for convenience in putting on or applying the hat, and likewise enables the convenient removal of the hat without dragging the latter Von the hair of the wearer.
With these and other objects in view, lthe present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it of course being understood that changes in the'form, proportion, size and minor details may be made, within the scope of the claim, without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention.
Specification of Letters Patent. Y Patented Mal, 1, 1921,V` Y l .Application filed October 27, Serial INT0.11,333,552, i. I. l i i In` the drawing;
o'f the present inventio tionwhich it is to be worn. v
Fig.. 2 is a vade elevation S'hqwing'the edges of.' lthe, slited` portion ofthe haty sepai rated -and unconnected. f
In the- 'drawing' thereference character l-` designates the crown of a tam-.oshanter type of hat while 2 designates the head band thereof. The hat shown in the accompanying drawing is a crocheted or knitted worsted hat, but the invention is not limited to this specific character of tam-oshanter as will hereinafter appear.
In carrying out the present invention, the hat is provided with a radial slit preferably extending from the outer or lower edge of the head band to about the center of the crown of the hat. Suitable means for detachably fastening together the edges of the slit is provided, the present embodiment including buttons 3 provided along one edge and upon the exterior of the hat, and button holes 4 along the other edge of the slit.
In applying the hat, the buttons are first disengaged from the button holes so `as to disengage the edges of the slit, whereupon the unconnected edges of the slit are then separated to open the hat, the hatV is then applied to the head and the edges of the slit brought together and the buttons engaged with the button holes, whereby the hat may be applied to the head of the wearer with the minimum disarrangement of the hair.
position shown in Fig. 2, from which it will around the head as distinguished from being forcibly pulled down over the top of the head.
To remove the hat, the buttons are first disengaged from the button holes and theny the hat-is opened by separating the discon` nected edges of the slit, to the condition illustrated in dotted lines of Fig. 2 of the drawing, which permits ofthe convenient removal of the hat without dragging the same upwardly and over the hair, and therefore the hat may be removed with little or no disarrangement of the hair. l
While the drawings show a knitted The hatv may be opened to the dotted line f to the ta1n o-shante r type of hat regardless of the material of which the, hat is made.
For instance the crown might be of velvet with a head band of the same or other mateit rial.
Applicant is aware of patents showing a hat split radially and provided with means for connecting together the edges of the split portion. In one instance the edges of thev slit are connected by a lacing so as to provide for adjusting the size of the hat to properly t the head of the wearer, the hat having a high stift' crown'not liable to disarrange the hair of the wearer. In another v instance a hat of washable white duck is slit radially and provided with buttons and button holes, but this hat has a high relatively sti crown which does not fall down into intimate contact with the hair of the wearer as in the tam-oshanter type of hat. `The disadvantages which are overcome bythe present invention do not exist in the type of hats above referred to.
What I claim is:
A tam-oshanter hat, embodying a crown and a band, the crown adjacent the band be- 'ing gathered and said hat having a slit eX- tending from approximately the center of the crown through the lower edge of the band to admit of placing the hat around or removing it from about the head in contradistinction to pulling it on and o the head, and fastening means along the edges of the crown and vband bordering upon the slit toy detachably secure the parts. y Y
