7 ATTACHMENT roR rLInns. I
I Specification of Iietters Patent Ifitented Feb, 22,
Application filed May 12, .1919. Serial No. 296,423. it
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ONNIE M. KUsIsTo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leeds in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments tor- Pliers,"
of which the following is a specification.
The object of the inventionis to'provide a device fcruse in conjunction with pliers to adapt the latter particularly to the ready removal of the binding wires employed to bind bales of hay, the device being designed to remove the binding wires without cutting them, so that they may be reeinployed for the binding or new bales.
. A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for pliers which is simple in construction, durable and effective in operation ture.
Other and further objects appear in the following description wherein the invention s set forth in detail.
To the exact constructioninwhich it is shown and described, the invention 1s not to be restricted The'right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes oralterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of the invention showing the latter in its initial position for gripping the two ends Off a bindlng wire of a bale of hay for the removal of binding wire.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the ends oi -the binding wire are bent to effect their loosening.
Fig. '3 is a side elevational view of the jaws of the plier and the attachment.
Fig. 4i is a plan view of they attachment;
Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig. 3 to show the attachment shifted to inoperative; position.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a pair of pliers having the usual jaws l and the handles 2, these two jaws being pivot ally connected together as is-usual,by means of the pivot stud 3. The stud 3 besides serving to connect the two elements of thepliers together, also serves to secure the improved attachment to the pliers and this attach-, ment comprises a block 4 formed with two.-
space stationary jaws 5 which are spaced from each other and which have their facing edges parallel as clearly indicated in "ordinary purposes.
and inexpensive to inanuiac speeified*... V
In testimony whereof I'afiiiz my signature. s
Fig. 4.. The b1 k is formed with an eye 6 through which the pivot stud passes and the block may be swung around to bring its jaws underneath the jaws of thepliersor turned in the opposite'directions to bring its aws underneath the handle portions of the pliers,,when the pliers may be' used for For use of the. device in removing the binding wires or" a bale ofhay', the block a is swung around to the position indicated in Fig. 3 andthus the jaws 5 lie substantially below the plier jaws. Thev two jaws 5 of the block are then made to straddle the bind: ing wire below the eye7'as indicated in Figs.
1 and 2, whereupon the jaws of the pliers are engaged with the outer strand of the wire loop forming the hook 8. The block cannot rise higher than the eye 7 for the wire adjacent the eye is seated in thecrot'ch between the two legsof the block and the latter is, therefore, fulcrumed at this point and with the two 'plier jaws gripping the outer strand ofthe latter forming the hook and may. thus be easily disengaged from the eye when the two ends of the binding wire are under tension as indic ated'in Fig.2.
8, the pliers may be forced down'ardly at the I handle ends with the result that the movement takes place with the crotch between the two-jaws as'a pivot andthe loop comprising the hook 8 is distorted by the pull. 'enerted by the pliers asindicated in Fig. 2
The invention havingbeen described, what 1 j is claimed as new and. useful is: I
l. The combination with a pair of pliers,
of a block attached to the pliers and carried beside the. jaws thereof, the block being jaws for the useful purpose specified.
ior ned to providetwo spaced stationary,
2. The cornbinationwith a pair'of pliers,
being provided with a pair of spaced sta of a block attached to'the pliers, the block v tionary aws, its means of attachment to the pliers permitting its jaws to be disposed ad. 1
jacent the plier jaws. orshifted to a posijaws.
tion where'they are remote fron jthe plier x l 3.,The combination with a pair of pliers,
of a pivot stud connecting the. plier elements together, and a'block pivotally carried on said stud and formedjwith a pair of spaced 11o,
