PATENT OFFICE.
LUKE S. DOAN, F BEDFORD, MISSOURI.
WIRE CLAMP.
Application filed February 27, 1923. Serial No. 621,606.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUKE S. DOAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bedford, in the county of Livingston and State of lklissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a grip designed primarily for use in connection with any make or type of wire stretcher for holding a fence wire when tensioning the same in the construction of a wire fence, said grip being simple and durable in construction and effective in operation and easy of manipulation both in the gripping and the releasing of a fence wire.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
hile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a side view of a wire clamp en'ibodying the invention, the full lines showing the gripping jaw open and the dotted lines the closed position thereof,
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the device, and
Figure 3 an end View thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several ,views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The clamp comprises a bar 1 preferably tapering throughout its length and having its tail upturned as indicated at 2 and apertured for the passage of a link 3. A lug 4 at the head of the bar 1 is disposed to one side thereof and is provided with a laterally extending pivot stud 5, upon which is mounted a jaw 6 whose gripping face is of cam formation. The forward end of the link 3 loosely engages the rear end of the pivoted jaw 6 and the parts are so disposed that when the link 3 is subjected to a pulling force, the jaw 6 closes upon the bar 1 and grips a wire or other article placed between the jaw and bar. A guard 7 at the outer side of the jaw 6 projects beyond the gripping face thereof so as to overlap the side of the bar 1 and prevent lateral displacement of the wire or other article gripped between the jaw 6 and bar 1.
In practice, the wire or other article to be stretched is gripped between the jaw 6 and bar 1 and the stretcher is applied to the outer end of the link 3, the gripping action of the jaw 6 being proportionate to the pulling force applied to the link 3. It will be understood that the article is extremely simple in construction, durable, and easy of operation both in applying the same to or removing it from the work.
What is claimed is:
A wire clamp consisting of a bar upturned at one end and having an opening through the upturned portion, an upwardly extending lug at the other end of the bar offset from its upper surface, a jaw directly over said surface to clamp a wire thereagainst. means pivoting said jaw to said lug, a draw link slidably disposed through said opening, and said link being loosely connected to the adjacent end of said jaw.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
