Maarn. ADAMS, or ATLANTIC-smv, imWasesinaV T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MARY C. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Plate-Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plate lifters, and has for its object the provision of a device of that character which is simple, substantial and cheap in construction, which may be used with plates of various sizes, which may be constructed chiefly of wire, which is of a construction that it can be easily cleaned and kept in a sanitary condition, and which is convenient, practical and eiiicient in its use.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a plan view of the device partly broken away, the plate being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view on the line b--b of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided generally, a pair of pivotally connected handle sections A and a pair of pivotally connected jaws B carried by the handle sections A. Each of the handle sections A embodies a wire shank 1 embodying a plurality of strands arranged in flat condition, and yformed with a looped handle 2 at the inner end of the shank. Sleeves 3 embrace the bent portions of the handles 2, and receive therein, the terminals of the wires to hold the said terminals in place. The Shanks 1 are parallel, and the handles 2 are flat.
In order to pivotally connect the Shanks 1, there is provided a hinge comprising a pair of leaves 4 and 5 having the alining butts 6 and 7, respectively, through which the hinge pinf8 is engaged. The hinge leaves 4 and 5 are bent back upon themselves and embrace` the shanks l adjacent the handles 2, whereby the hinge leaves are not only rigidly sel, ini-tained May 4', A1915.
cured to the Shanks 1, but hold the strands of the shanks securely together. The hinge also firmly holds the shanks 1 in parallel relation, to permit the Shanks to be swung to and from each other properly. The hinge pin 8 is extended outwardly between the Shanks 1.
In order to normally separate the shanks l and jaws B carried thereby, a coiled wire spring 9 is disposed upon the extended portion of the hinge pin 8 immediately in ad- Vance of the hinge, and the terminal portions 10 of the spring are bent or looped so as to embrace the Shanks 1. j
Each of the jaws or gripping arms B embodies a wire bent into a U-shaped loop, and the terminal portions of each jaw are bent to embrace one of the Shanks 1, as at 11, and to embrace the hinge pin 8, as at 12. As illustrated, the terminal portions of the jaws B are first passed under the Shanks l, thence around the hinge pin 8, and are thence formed into hooks passing over the Shanks 1 and engaged to the branches or arms of the respective jaws B. The portions or eyes 12 which embrace the hinge pin, are interlocked to prevent relative longitudinal movement between the jaws, and it will be noted that the ends of the hinge pin 8 are headed to prevent the jaws from moving outwardly excessively. The arms or branches of the jaws B are curved, as at 13, adjacent the yoke or intermediate portions of the jaws to enable the yoke or intermediate portions of the jaws to properly engage under the flange or rim of the plate 14. Ordinarily, when the device is free, the spring 9 will separate the jaws B and by pressing together the handles 2, the jaws B may be swung together to grasp plates of various sizes.
Due to the peculiar construction and assemblage of the parts as herein disclosed, the present device carries out the desired functions in an entirely satisfactory and efH- cient manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is A plate lifter embodying a pair yof parallel wire shanks each embodying a plurality of strands formed with a handle at j the rear end of the shank, a hinge comprisl ing a pair of leaves and a hinge pin connect-y ing them, the leaves of the hinge being bent to embrace the Shanks adjacent thehandles,
brace the respective 'Shanks and hinge pin,
5 the terminal portions of the jaws loeingin-k terloeked. to prevent relative longitudinal movement between the. jaws.
