Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. Y
CHARLES P. RICHARDSON, OF GROVETON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,939, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. RICH- ARDSON, of Groveton, in the county of Coos and "State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grindstone Troughs and Hangers, of which the followin g is a specification:
This invention relates to the construction of troughs for grindstones, and the brackets or hangers for supporting the stone; and it consists in the manner of putting in the bottom of the trough, and in so constructing the hangers that the trough may be fastened down with screws, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of a grindstone and trough showing the hangers, being constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the grindstone. B is the trough, made of wood. D represents the sides of the trough. E is the bottom. The bottom is put in by means of a circular and slightly dovetailed groove, F, in each of the sides. The bottom has a dovetail tenon on its two opposite edges, which tenons are compressed by any suitable means so that they will readily the trough and hanger enter the grooves. When water is put in the trough, these tenons readily swell and fill the grooves and make the trough water-tight and hold the sides securely together. sents the hanger or bracket, which is screwed or otherwise fastened to the sides of the trough, as seen in Fig. 1. H represents the legs of the hangers, which extend down to the bottom edges of the sides, with each a projecting toe, I, through which is a screwhole for fastening the trough down to a bench orfixture. The hangers thus support the shaft of the grindstone, and serve to hold the trough firmly in place. The trough is light and substantial, and much cheaper than the cast-iron troughs in common use.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new and improved article of manufacture, the grindstone-trough B, constructed substantially as described.
2. In combination with a grindstone-trough, the hanger or bracket Gr,2l.IIaI1'g8d to support the stone and secure the trough, as described.
