Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
Application filed December 22, 1920- Serial No. 432,537.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AnrHoNsn LANG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Travelers Kit, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a travelers kitfand the invention aims to provide novel means whereby a brush and many toilet articles may be housed in small compass and be embodied in a container of portable form.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for closing the various compartments and for retaining the articles therein.v
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally, and to enhance the utility of, devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
I do not bind myself to the specific form depicted scope of what is make alterations, without departing from the spirit of the invention or placing the utility of the device in jeopardy.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view disclosing a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective 'view of the lid, the closure or looking slide being retracted; Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the body of the article;
Fig. 4 is a plan of the body, the end slides and the intermediate panel of Fig. 3 having been removed; Fig. 5 is a plan of the panel; Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are sections taken, respectiively, on the lines 6'6, 7-7 and 8-8 of The device forming the subject matter of this application comprises a container, including a body 1 having a transverse partition 2, defining a compartment 3 in one end of the body. A tubular receiver, such as a rouge box 4, is secured in the compartment 3, the rouge box comprising a base or body, and a removable cover 6. A pad 5 is located in the rouge box. The base 7 of a collapsible drinking cup 8 is inverted over the rouge box 4 and bears on the cover 6. A
and 37 at the opposite drinking cup 8 being interposed between the cover 6 and the slide 39, and serving as a guard Wh1ch protects the cover 6 against wear when the slide is moved.
A transverse partition 9 extends part way across the body 1, as Fig. 4 will show. A
Aplate 17 extends between the transverse partition 2 and the transverse partition 9 and forms intermediate com artments 18 and 19, located side by side. strip 20 lies along one side wall of the body 1, within the compartment 19, and defines a shoulder, the function of which will be made manifest hereinafter. The strip 20 has, at one end, a transverse extension 21, cooperating wlth the inner end of the partition 9, to separate the compartment 19 from a relatively small pocket 22, located at the side of the compartment 11. A tube 23 of dentifrice may be located in the compartment 18. A bufler 24 may be placed in the compartment 19, the buffer having a longitudinal socket 25, into which one end of a nail file 26 may be thrust. The shoulder formed by the strip 20, together with the part 21 of the strip, serves to support the handle 27 of a tooth brush, the head 28 of the tooth brush projecting into the pocket 22.
The transverse partitions 2 and 9 are supplied with projections 29, whereon a panel 30 is supported, the panel constituting a closure for the intermediate compartments 19 and 18. The panel 30 carries on one side, a mirror 31, the panel being sup lied on its opposite side with pockets 32. he pockets may be employed for holding hair pins 33, a lip stick 34, or the like. The pockets 32 form prominent projections on the panel 30, and project into the compartments 18 and 19, to hold the tube 23 and the tooth brush 2728 in lace, as shown in Fig. 6.
n thesides of the body 1, guide grooves 35 are formed, the grooves defining ribs 36 sides of the body. The rib 37 is cut away intermediate its ends to form an o ening 38. Slides 39 reciprocate beneath the ribs 36 and 37, in the gu1degrooves 35. One slide 39 forms a closure for the compartment 3 and engages the base 7 of the drinking cup 8, as hereinbefore explained. The inner ends of-the slides 39 over-lap the panel 30 at its ends, and hold the panel on the supporting projections 29. In order to mount either slide 39 in place, the slide is located about mid-way between the ends of the body 1. One edge of the slide isinserted beneath the intermediate portion of the rib 36, the opposite edge of the slide being moved downwardly through the opening 38, and the slide then being moved toward one end or the other of the body 1, in the grooves 35. That slide 39 which the body 1 in Fig. 3, serves as a closure for the pocket 22 and serves, likewise, to prevent'the cover 14 of the powder puff compartment 11 from openin The body 1 is provided at its ends with seats 40 which are undercut as shown at 41..
The seats taper toward one end of the body 1,.as shown at 42. The numeral 43 marks a lid or brush-back, the head of the brush being denoted by the numeral 44. In the lid 43, a recess 45 is formed, the same being adapted to receive a comb 46.' At the edges of the recess 45, the lid 44 is undercut as shown at 47, to receive a closure or looking slide 48. "The lid 43 is provided with 49, shaped to fit in one of the seats 40, the closure 48 having a similar lug 50, adapted to fit in the other seat 40'. The lugs 49 and 50 are tapered as indicated at 51, and are undercut as shown at 52. The lug 49 on the lid 43 may be introduced into one of the seats 40, and when the locking slide of closure 48 is advanced, the lug 50 will engage in the other seat 40 and hold the lid 43 on the body 1. The movement of the lid 43 in one direction is limited because the lug 49 is tapered as indicated at 51. The movement of the lid 43 in an o posite direction, and the movement of the c osure 48, as well, may be limited b a simple latch 53 carried b one end of tlie body 1 and cotiperating with a keeper 54 on the lid 43. Ordinarily, the brush head 44 is used when the Fparts 43 and 1 are connected as shown in ig. 1. If it is desired to use the brush head in a limited space, for instance, between the crown of the derby hat and the brim-roll, then the part 43 may be separated from the body 1, as shown 1n Fig. 2. If desired, the closure 48 may be withdrawn a trifle farther than shown in Fig. 2, to the end 'that the closure may serve as a brush handle.
85 the structure forming the subject matter As has been explained, the panel 30 is held by the inner ends of the slides 39, and when the panel and the slides are removed, access may be had to the interior of the body 1, as shown in Fig. 4. It is clear that is adjacent to the right hand end of l compartments tainer of this application provides a means whereby many toilet articles may be stowed in small space and be carried about readily.
I claim 1. In a device of the class described, a container comprising a body having seats at its ends; a lid for the body, the lid having a recess and being provided with a lug engaged in one seat; and a closure for the recess, the closure being mounted slidably in the lid, the closure having a lug which engages in the other seat, when the closure is advanced to cover the recess, thereby to hold the lid on the body.
2. In a device of the class described, a container comprising a body having end and an intermediate compartment; a panel forming a closure for the intermediate'compartment; and slides constituting closures for the end compartments, the slides being overlapped on the ends of the panel to hold the panel in place, the body having oppositely disposed ribs beneath which the slides reciprocate, one rib being cut away between its ends to facilitate the insertion of the slides beneath theribs.
3. In a device of the class described, a concomprising a body having end compartments, and provided with intermediate compartments located side by side; a panel forming a closure for the intermediate compartments, the panel having prominent projections extended into the intermediate compartments to hold articles therein; and slides constituting closures for the end 'compartments, the slides being overlapped on the ends of the panel to hold the panel in place.
4. In a device of the body having seats in its ends; a brush com prising a back and a head carried by the back, the back being provided with a lug engaged in one seat; and a locking slide mounted to reciprocate in the back and having a lug which engages in the other seat, thereby to hold the back and the body together, the back being releasable from the body to vary the weight of the device when the brush is in use, and to accommodate the brush for use in a restricted space.
5. In a device of the class described, a container having a compartment; a slide mounted to reciprocate in the container and constituting a closure for the compartment; a tubular receiver in the compartment and comprising a base and a cover; and a cupshaped member inverted over the cover and my own, I have hereto aflixed m signature.
