Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EAEIS ROSE, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,869, dated March i8, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Beit known that I, FABIUS ROSE, of Boston, Suffolk county, Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Drawers, of which the following is a Specification:
The purpose of this invention is to provide an attachment for drawers which shall enable a drawer when pulled out to its greatest extent to support itself firmly and steadily in a horizontal position; and to this end my invention, as herein explained, consists. in the employment, in combination with the drawer and its case or support, of two slides or plates, one upon each side thereof', said slides being attached toand sliding upon the sides of the case and in immediate contact with the sides of the drawers, while each side of the drawer is provided with a stud which rests and slides upon the upper edge of the adjacent slide, and
. by this means serving to support the drawer in a horizontal position when pulled out toits greatest extent, the whole being in manner and for the purpose hereinafter explained.
In the drawing accompanying this specification, Figure lis a side elevation of a drawer and its case, the former being pulled out to its greatest extent. Fig. 2 is a transverse and vertical section of the same closed, and Fig. 3 a side view of one of the extension plates or slides to be explained.
In the above-named drawing, A represents a rectangular case, which Afor convenience I have adopted in this instance to illustrate the nature of my invention. The drawer is shown in the drawing at B as a rectangular box of ordinary form and construction, except that it contains upon each side a Spur, a, projecting laterally from it. AUpon each side of the drawer B, and between .it and the adjacent side of the case A, I dispose loosely a thin rectangular oblong plate or slide, D or D', each of these plates being attached to the contiguous side of the case A by a screw, b, or its equivalent, which passes through a long countersunk slot, c, created in each plate, this screw and slot connection permitting the plate to slide freely in a longitudinal direction, but
maintaining it in a horizontal position. Upon the front upper corner of each plate D I create or dispose a Stop or abutment, d, which coincides with and intercepts the spur a here` tofore alluded to.
The above description embraces the mechanical construction of the elements of my invention, their operation being as follows: Upon pulling out the drawer it will advance for one-third its length, or thereabout, before exerting any action upon the extension slides D D', but on reaching this extent of withdrawal the spur a upon each side of the drawer intercepts the adjacent stop d of the slide, and upon continuing the withdrawal of the drawer the slides follow it, and become, by the action of the screws b and spurs a, a means of support to such drawer to maintain it in a horizontal position when withdrawn to its fullest extent or any extent. The length of the slot c and the position of the screw or stop b relatively thereto determines the point at which the drawer seizes and begins to withdraw the slides, and this point may be variedat pleasure by changing the length of the slot or the position of the screw or stop. The outer termination of each slotc drops or is enlarged somewhat, as shown at c, in order to free the drawer and prevent binding or sticking when it is returned to place. The countersinking of the Slot c provides lateral stiness, and is advantageous in other respects.
Claim. v
I claim- A The invention herein described, consisting of the slides D D', in combination with the drawer B and its support, the slides containing the abutments d and slots c, and operating in connection with the screw or stops b and the drawer containing the spurs a c, the whole being in manner and operating substantially as hereinbefore explained.
