DOOR ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914:.
Application filed October 25, 1913. Serial No. 797,338.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .IEREMIAH E. JOHN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door attachments and particularly to an attachment for doors of toilet rooms; and it has for its primary object the provision of a device of this character which will be applicable to the casing of the door and which will include a member normally projecting beyond the casing and in the path of the door, so as to engage the latter and prevent the same from being brought to a full closed position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the door engaging member will be automatic in its action for a projection in the path of the door, and one which will be constructed so that it may be operated with facility when it is desired to adjust the door to a. full closed position.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing the application of the device to a portion of a door casing; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, showing the door engaging member in an operative position in full lines and in an inoperative position in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. l is a horizontal section through a portion of the casing, showing the door engaging member in an active position.
The device comprises an attaching plate 1 mounted in a horizontal position on the casing 2 of a door structure and provided at suitable points with openings 3 for the reception of fastening devices 4 that may be engaged in the casing, as shown. The member 1 is provided along its lower edge and preferably adjacent each of its lower corners with a right angularly-extending stop lug 5, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
Intermediate of its ends the attaching plate is provided with an opening 6, through which is extended a securing screw 7. The
door engaging member is constructed preferably from a plate 8 having4 a uniform thickness throughout and provided preferably with a reduced inner portion 9 which is pivotally supported from the screw 7. The door engaging member is enlarged at its outer end and is provided preferably with side edges 10, which are arranged parallel with each other. Said door engagingmember has a length whereby its extreme outer portion is adapted to project slightly beyond the adjacent end of thel attaching plate l, so as to be disposed in the direct path of movement of the door A. Vhen in this position one of the edges l0 is adapted to rest against the adjacent corner stop 5 of the attaching plate. At the upper edge, and preferably intermediate the ends thereof, the attaching plate is provided with a stop lug l1, which is disposed in the direct path of upward movement of the door engaging member so as to engage thereagainst and limit the adjustment of the member to an inactive position. IVhen adjusted to an inactive position the outer end of the door engaging member lies approximately on a line drawn vertically from the outer vertical edge of the attaching plate. The stop 11 is positioned so as to prevent the door engaging member from assuming a true vertical position, and, as a consequence of this construction, said member is adapted to gravitate to an active door engaging position when the door is moved to an open position.
By providing lugs 5 as specified at the opposite lower corners of the attaching plate, the device is made reversible, so that it will readily accommodateitself to right and left hand swinging doors. In other words, the device may be applied to either sideof the door casing, as may depend upon the swinging movement of the door. It is, of course, understood that a suitable kerf may be formed in the door, so as to accommodate the lug 5 of the attaching member when the door is closed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to `Without departing from the prin-y clple or sacricing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what claim is l. A door attachment comprising an attaching member secured to the easing, a door engaging member movably mounted on the attaching member and'norma-lly projecting beyond the casing and disposed in the path of movement' of the door to prevent the latter Jfrom 'assuming a closed position, means for limiting movement of the door engaging member toward an active position, and'means for limiting movement of said member toward an inactive position and for retaining such position of the memberv as to permit the latter to gravitate lin the direction of the rst means When the door is opened. I
copies c: this' patent may be obtained for 2. An attachment for door structures comprising an attaching member secured to the casing, a door engagingmember pivoted to the attaching member and normally projecting beyond the casing and disposed in the path of movement of the door, a lug formed on the attaching member and normallyengaging the door engaging memberwto lhold the same in a horizontal position, and a second lug formed on the attaching member and disposed in the path of adjustment of the door engaging member to limit the movement of said member toward an inactive position.
In testimony whereof l'. aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
