IMPROVEMENT IN FURNlTURE-DRAWER S.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 129,37 7, dated July 16, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. WARTH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drawers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical central section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same taken in the line a: m, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrow opposite to that line. Fig. 3 is a moditication of a part ofmy invention.

This invention relates to drawers for desks, bureaus, &c., and also money-tills; and it consists in the arrangement of a guide-piece beneath the drawer bottom, said guide-piece sliding on a guide-rod secured horizontally in the frame beneath said drawer in the direction of its length, one end of said rod catching in a flanged box arranged upon the front part oftheframe, and its opposite end being held by a small di'sk placed over the hole in the rear of the franie, through which it is passed in such a manner that when said drawer is shoved in and out said rod and guide-piece will effectually prevent any jogging or bolting on the part of the same, and will cause it to slide in a free and easy manner.

In the drawing, the letterA designates a frame which is arranged in a bureau, desk, or any suitable articleto which my invention is applied, on the front and rear of which frame are cross-pieces B B, the front piece B being provided with a suitable cavity at or near the middle thereof to receive a dovetailed castiron box, Q, which is further provided with a flange, a, that catches over the top of the frame, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and thus the box 0 is firmly held in position. This box is further prevented from dropping out of the frame by a rod, D, that is passed through the rear cross-piece B, and whose end 12 is provided with a screw-thread that screws into a socket in the said box 0 on the front of the frame. After the rod D has been suitably secured, a disk, -c, is placed over the hole in the rear cross-piece B, through which the said rod has been passed, which disk serves to prevent the rod from working itself out of the frame. The rod D further serves as a guidepiece, E, consisting in this example of a piece of sheet metal suitably bent and secured to a projection'on the rear end of a drawer, F, in any suitable manner, said rod being passed through a small hole in the guide-piece E before it is secured in the frame. WVhen the drawer F is shoved in and out the guide-piece E will slide on the rod D and will cause the drawer to slide in a straight line and prevent any variation from a direct course. My drawer possesses the further advantage of not being allowed to drop out of the frame, as, when the guide-piece reaches the box 0, it forms a barrier to its egress. Instead of the guide-piece E I can use, if desirable, an eyebolt, G, as shown in Fig. 3, with the same result.

I do not claim guiding a drawer in and out by means of a bar rigidly and directly secured upon the under side of the bottom of the drawer, said bar being formed with a groove within which fits a tongue formed upon a bar extending across the frame which supports the drawer, for such is not new; but- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The guide-piece E sliding on the guide rod D, in combination with the drawer F and frame A, substantially as described.

2. The flanged box 0 and disk 0, in combination with the rod D, guide-piece E, the drawer, and with the frame A, substantially as described.
