Specification of Letters Patent;
,Pat'ente dlJan. 4, 192 1.
Application filed September 12 1919. seriarNo. 323,362.
To all whom it mag concern: I
Be it known thatwe, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD and ETHAN I. Donns, citizens'of the United States and residents of Pitts bur h, in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to,
make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,0bjects of the invention being to provide a universally movable or adjustable mounting for the head of a staybolt whereby the accurate alinement of the staybolt withyits points of connection with the respective boiler sheets shall be insured regardless of differences 1n angularity of the inner and outer boiler sheets relatively to each other; to provide an efficient bearing member for the rounded head of a staybolt; to so mount such bearing member within a sleeve that it shall be capable of movement, and to construct the bearing sleeve in such manner as to facilitate the escape of sediment or incrustation. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of our invention.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet which may be the inclined roof sheet of a boiler, and 2 a horizontal inner boiler sheet.
I The roof sheet is provided with a bolt opening 3 a portion of the wall of which is curved transversely of the thickness of the sheet, while the inner or lower end of said opening may-be made somewhat flaring.
A bearing sleeve or member 4 is mounted in the opening in the boiler sheet and has a general tapering shape, the lower'or inner portion of said sleeve having a curved or rounded exterior portion 5 whereby the sleeve may have a universally movable bearing on the curved wall of the opening in the g p p forming a throat through which the stayf boiler sheet.
'' by Letters- Patent, is 2-- and said flange. I
eled under face and an outer curved face 8. k
A staybolt 9 enters thefsleeve 4: and its the opposite end of s'aid bolt issuitably secured to the inner boiler sheet 2. The head of the bolt may be rounded and between said head and the annular flange 6 at the lower or inner end of the bearing sleeve, an annular bearing member 11 is located. I This bearing'member may be, made in the form head 10 is disposed within said sleeve, while I of a tapering ring having a curved seat 12 in its smaller end for the accommodation of the rounded :head of the bolt, and having end to freely engage the beveled face 7 of the flange 6. Thus it will be seen that the bolt head has, a rocking mounting upon the annular bearing member 11 and that the lat ter may have a movement on the flange 6.
The flaring throat formed by the flange 6 affords ample play to accommodate the swing of the bolt and 'by making the wall of this throat curved or rounded, as at 8, the escape" of incrustation or sediment expelled by the movements of the bolt will The upper or outer end portion of the sleeve 4 is threaded interiorly to receive a plug or closure 14 which may be made hol low to accommodate the bolt headand afford clearance therefor. closure is made with an angular portion 15 to receive'aiwrench, and between the inner end of said closure anda shoulder 16 in the sleeve, a gasket 17 is located.
When the sleeve shall have been properly The plug ,or i
adjusted to insure accurate alinement of the [bolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets, said sleeve will be united tothe outer sheet by means of'a weld as indicated at 18.:
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure 1. In a staybolt structure, the combinationwith a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing sleeve provided atits inner end portion'with an inwardly projecting annular flange having a rounded'outer portion,
a staybolt having a head located in said sleeve, the rounded portion of the flange bolt passes, and an annular bearing 'mem-r ber disposed freely between the bolt head 2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing sleeve having initial universally movable mounting in said opening and having an inwardly projecting annular flange, a bolt having a head located in said sleeve, a bearing member freely disposed Within the sleeve between said annular flange and bolt head, and means securing said sleeve to the boiler sheet.
3. Ina staybolt structure, the'combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing sleeve having initial universally mov'able mounting in 'said opening,
said sleeve having an inwardly projecting 15 flange, a bolt having a head located in said sleeve, an annular bearing member havin a seat at one end for the bolt head and mounted at its other end on said annular flange of the sleeve, and a weld uniting said 20 sleeve to the boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness.
