LEGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Deg 28, 1920 Application filed May 7, 1920. Serial No. 379,499.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARRIE STARR PRINCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Peekskill, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water-proof leggings, and its objects are to provide a thin, close fitting legging that can be worn under other leggings as a complete guard against dampness, to make such a legging reversible, that is, that may be worn inside out, and the bottom edge may be worn inside or outside of rubber shoes. The objects are attained by the means set forth in this specification and the accompanying drawings, in both of which like letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the legging as worn. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the legging partly open. Fig. 3 is a view of the top of the le ging clearly disclosing the construction. Fig. 4 is a view of the top of the legging as reversed. Fig. 5 is a detail to be described.
The material of which the legging is to be made can be represented in thickness by a single thin line, but in all the figures. except 1 and 2 a substantial thickness is shown a for clearness of description, and a strap in Fig. 2 is shown in section for the same object. The material to be used is thin rubber cloth or other like light and impervious fabric, so thin and light that it maybe worn under the stocking if desirable.
To make up the girth of the legging three pieces of material are used, the side it constituting one-half the girth, and the parts 7" and 0 constitute the other half, the latter two lapping one over the other as in Fig. 3. In joining these parts together they are laid together edgewise, as at '5 y', Figs. 3 and 4, and are secured by means of adhesive strips if z', and j j, particularly in Figs. 3 and 4.
To the section 7 a flap 6 is attached by means of an adhesive strip m, and the side 0 is insertible as a tongue, between the part a? of f and the flap 6. For fastening the two sides together snap fastenings are employed, and they may be of any practicable kind, but
preferably of a thin form so that lumpi ness may be avoided. The side 0 is provided with two rows of snaps, one row on the inner edge, and a row on the outer surface set back from the first row. The other halves of the snaps are secured respeo t1velyone row on the edge of the flap e, and the other near the inner edge of the part. d. p In fastening the legging, the inner row of snaps on the part c is made to engage with that on the outer side of the part (Z, that is, the half snaps a engage with the half snaps a, and the half snaps Z) engage with the half snaps Z). 7
All edges of the legging are bound, as at 2 Figs. 1 and 2, preferably with a suitable adhesive tape, to make all parts completely waterproof. The flap 6 has a wide extension of the binding tape on the inside, as in Figs. 2 and 3, that affords a strong backing for the snaps attached to it, as shown in enlarged detail in Fig. 5.
On the bottom of the legging a strap 0 is secured to pass under the foot or the shoe, as m Flgs. l and 2, and is attached to the sides It and f. To prevent the front of the legging working upward a'toe-strap r 15 provided, to be just a thin, not over-narrow strip of the material of which the.legging 1s made. One end of this strap is secured to the toe part of the legging, and the other end is united to a strap 39 that is attached to the sides 7t and a. As in Fig. 1 this strap passes under the shoe inside of a rubber shoe; and to provide for the lower edge of the legging extending over the top of a rubber shoe, the straps can be secured back from the very edge of the legging, as at u u and 2 Fig. 2. They are shown as fast to the edges of the legging in Fig. 1.
A strap Z Z is applied to the top of the legging just above the knee, as in Fig. 1, to prevent the legging working downward. This strap is composed partly of elastic, as at to Fig. 3, and to be fastened with snaps n a, Fig. 3. This strap is removable to make it. applicable to the outside of the legging when the legging is reversed, as in Fig. 4. Socket .parts of snaps are secured to the legging as n on the inside of the legging, and n" a" on the outside of the legging as in Figs. 3 and 4:. The ball parts of the snaps are attached to the straps to avoid projections from the surfaces of the legi Fig. 3 is shown without binding of the edges to reveal clearly the construction. Fig. 4 is a top edge view showing how the parts arrange themselves in reversing. The pro-- vision of snaps to avoid a proper handling of the knee-strap has been described.
some, and can be worn under another garment. Obviously, it can be fleece lined, and be made in a variety of colors.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A legging of waterproof material comprising three principal parts, said parts being united by a jointure of their edges with adhesive strips covering the joints, the front open side overlapping the rear side, a flap set back from the edge of the rear side overlapping the edge of the front side, snaps to fasten the sides, the inside of the front side being snapped to the outside of the rear side under the flap, the flap being snapped to the front side, adhesive binding on all the edges, the binding on the flap extended to give support to the snaps thereon, a toe-strap fast to the toe end of the legging to pass under the shoe, a strap fast to the forward sides of the legging to pass under the shoe, said strap and the inner end of the toe-strap being united, a strap at the seams of the legging to pass under the shoe, and a removable knee-strap secured by snaps.
2. In a legging as described, capable of being reversed or used inside-out, a remov able knee strap, snaps to secure the strap, the ball parts of the snaps being attached to the strap, and the socket parts of the snaps beingsecured to the inside and the outside of the legging.
