STRENGTHENING-BAND FOR BOXES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STUART N. PARSONS, a citlzen of the Unlted States, residlngat New Britain, in the county of Hartford,
of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eitrengthening-Bands for Boxes and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a strengthening band for boxes the like and has as its o ject to provide a simple, strong and efficientconstruction w-hich may be easily applied-to the box and quickly opened to permit ready access tothe interior of the box and which will protect the contents of the box from atmospheric deterioration.

Referring to the drawings in designates a receptacle or box which may be of any desired shape, it being illustrated as rectangular in cross section. The box has one or more grooves 11 extending transversely around it, and these grooves receive the strengthening bands so that the bands do not interfere with stacking of the boxes and the bands are protected against injury when two boxes are rubbed against each other. The cover of the box, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4, has a rabbet in which the top edges of the sides of the box fit. Between the cover and the sides of the box is a compressible gasket 26 preferably consist-- ing of a round continuous strip of rubber or the like.
Each of the bands comprises a strap 12, preferably formed of spring metal bent to encircle all but one side of the box, and overlapping connecting plates 13 and 14 liingedly connected to opposite ends of the strap. Each of the hinged members 13 and 14, herein referred to as the locking plate and hasp-plate, respectively, are formed from a metal sheet having oppositely inclined side edges bent upwardly at right angles to the body of the plate to form reinforcing webs 18 and ears 19 extending beyond the edge 20 of the plate. to receive the ends of a pintle 21 passing through the knuckle 17.
The locking plate 13 has a finger lock 22 consisting of a flat plate hinged, as shown, to a stud 23 swiveled to the plate 13..
The hasp plate 14 is slightly less in length than the width of the box, and its outer end is of such width as to overlie the plate 13 between the webs 18 thereof. The plate 14 has a slot 24 of such dimensions as to permit the finger lock 22 to pass edgewise therethrough.
The strap 12 may be secured to the box in any suitable manner, in the present instance, screws 25 being illustrated for this purpose and while any number of screws may be employed, I have shown but three screws, one passing through the bottom portion 15 of the strap, and one passing through each side portion 16 of the strap adjacent the upper end thereof. The sides of the strap 16 prior to the attachment thereof to the box are bowed inwardly, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2.
After the cover of the box and the straps have been placed in position, the knuckles 20 extend over and are in close proximity The plates 13 and 14 when swung downwardly over the top of the box operate as levers, the edges 20 being brought into engagement with the cover and exerting such pressure thereon as to cause compression of the gasket 26. It will be readily understood that to lock the hasp-plate 14 to the locking plate 13, the finger lock is turned into the position shown on the band on the right hand side of Fig. 1 so that it may be inserted through the slot 24. Then the lock 22 is turned and folded down into position between the webs 18 of the locking plate and these webs thus prevent accidental displacement of the locking plate from looking position.
It will be noted that the box and strengthening bands are very simple in construction so that the cost of production is relatively low, They may be repeatedly used if des1red or after first use may be thrownaway.
I t is of course obvious that my invention be taken as restrictive of my conception.
I claim as my invention 1. A. box strengthening band having a pair of hinged overlapping plates, one of which has upstanding webs between which oneend of the other plate is positioned and a hinged lock piece swiveled to said first plate and adapted to be folded down between the webs thereof, said webs constituting stops preventing rotation of said lock piece when the lock piece is folded down, the other of said plates having a slot through which said lock piece is anapted to pass edgewise,
2. A box strengthening hand having a strap, and a pair of overlapping plates pivotally connected. to the ends of said strap, each of said plates having near its pivot a cam-portion exerting pressure against the surface of the box,'and means for securing said platesin overlapped position,

A box strengthening band having a. strap, and means adapted to close the open side of said strap and having a plate pivoted to one end of said strap, said plate constituting a lever having a portion adjacent its pivot adapted to press against plate is swung into lockstrap encircling all but one side of the box,
knuckles on the ends of said strap and overhangin the remaining side of the box, a pair of overlapping plates closing the open side of said strap, each of said plates having a body portion and a pair of ears arising from the body portion and extending beyond one end thereof so that said end of the plate constitutes a cam portion adapted to engage the surface of the box, pintles for said knuckles and ears, and means for locking said plates'in overlapped position.
6. The combination with a box having a cover and a compressible gasket between the cover and the body portion of the box, of a box strengthening band comprising a strap encircling allbut the cover of the box. knuckles on the ends of said straps and overhanging said cover, a pair of overlapping plates closing the open side of said strap, each of said plates having a body por-' tion and a pair of ears arising from the body portion and extending beyond one end thereof so that said end of the plate conti tutes a cam portion adapted to force the cover against said gasket and compress the same, pintles for said knucklesand ears, and 7 means for locking said plates inoverlapped' position.
